Max Tire Size on Rear CB650 Comstar Wheel ?
« on: March 19, 2006, 06:05:20 PM »

I'm getting ready to start checking out tires for my CB550K project w/ Comstar wheels
and I really need to know if anyone out there knows how large of a tire will fit the rim and still fit
the 550 frame. I'm not going to be putting any high dollar tires on it, I can't afford it. I've got
too many projects. When I first joined the site, "Terry in Australia" suggested that I needed to
cut back on what I've got, I agreed but, haven't done it yet Terry. Most of mine vary from being
basket cases to project bikes. Anyway, that's another story. Any input would be helpful.
                                                Later on, Bill :) ;)

Mine is a 120/90-18 on my 650, looking at the swing arm clearance I think a 130 would be the max. excuse the cruddy photo, she is a work in progress.

Someone must have swapped that wheel as the 650s only had 16 and 17 rear wheels.
I have had a 140/90 16 on mine and a 130/90 17.

Thanks for the response scunny, I appreciate it.

Terry, my rear wheel is a 16" and you know all about my front wheel. I need to get some
measurements on my 550, since that's what the wheels will be on. I guess I mainly need to
measure from one side of the swingarm to the other side. I don't know if I also need to measure
from the center of the wheel & forward to the swingarm or not. Would you mind checking the
measurements on your 650? Or do you know if they are about the same between the 650 and the
550? I just don't want to buy a tire and not be able to use it. Thanks to you Terry for your help on
this. I'm still looking at other bikes, listening to you guys and collecting ideas on how I'm going to
build this bike. Later on, Bill

      Thanks there duster,

I do appreciate the info. I've heard  pros & cons on these wheels but, I just had
to give the comstars a shot. I like the look. I just hope they are worth the effort. Well, if
they don't, I can always go back to spoke wheels. Thanks again duster. Later on, Bill :) ;)

On the 16 inch where the wheel is the swing arm is 7 inch.
The 17 tire being taller falls where the arm is 6.5 inch wide.
The 140 will work on a 650 but dont know on your project.

              Thanks Terry,

You, duster and scunny have been a big help on the tire thing. I want that meaty
look on the rear and at least a nice size tire on front (not skinny but, I'm not sure if I want
that meaty look on the front). I've seen bikes with good size tire on the front  that looked
good but, I also want a good safe ride. Thanks again guys. Later on, Bill :) ;)

I wonder what you could get in a 80 profile tire.
E-mailing you some pics.

Is anyone running 80 profile tires on comstars that could give me some measurements?
I'm still checking on what type of tires and what sizes I can put on comstars that will be on a 77'
CB550K. I appreciate any input. Later on, Bill
