72 CB500K.. Its gonna be a long road. The great 50/50 SPLIT!!
« on: February 09, 2011, 04:57:53 AM »
 ???
Ok guys, first Ill just say "Hey"

The short of it is... I just traded some parts from a old build to start this new one.
It's a 72 CB500k (f?) -- it's a 4... So I now am a proud owner of a 75 550 rolling frame
and a 90% there cb500 engine... Not a bad trade for old parts an a .22 rifle.

But my big thing is I've never build a four. Just twins, Triumph 650 & a HD iron head 900.
So I know in my mind I can do it... But what the he'll have I gotten my self into...??

I'll do my best not to rant or whine.. But if I am just tell me to "shut up"..
(pictures soon) sorry

Sounds like a good deal, but do you have a title? That can be a nightmare depending on the state requirements :(  A four cylinder is not difficult, need an extra hand when you put the cylinders over the pistons.  And that can be eliminated by using blocks to hold the pistons steady. Download the manual from this site and with your experience you should be fine.

K or F, if it has 4 into 1 it is an F, 4 into 4 would be the K.  That is unless the someone changed the exhaust.

Welcome...Larry

Thanks Larry for the welcome.....

I'm lucky enough that in GA if it's 20yrs or older.. No title needed.. But whn it's time to tag her a (bill of sale) will work.. And if I want I can get a salvage title made up for her.. But Ill come that bridge later..

As for the manuals... Hell yes! Got em.. An whoever put them up is my new best friend..

Also the one good thing about Atlanta, we have more then a few cycle gurus.. That I have access to pick there brains, but this build is all me.. Scared but willful...

And last, I have no pipes, so for now it's a 72 CB500...

The 500 is a K, it's the 550 that has both a K & a F model.

Well by that, the 500 engines a K & the badge on the 550 frame says K so I guess it's a K..!
((glad that's all cleared up))

The K was just the designation for the type of pipes an tank were on it, Right??

Welcome to the addiction!   ;D

The K and F bikes were different in a few ways.....the most noticeable differences were the tank and pipe setup, as you already mentioned, but also the frame (especially where the passenger pegs mount) and other various bits (side covers, chain guard, paint, etc).

Good luck in fixing her up!

Snapped cam chain and water in the #4 jug....

The last guy who owned it was a tool... left it outside in the rain without a plug in it... Then took the head apart because the piston rusted and he rolled the crank & snapped the cam chain that had fallen inside. Just left it in the back of the basement after selling the other pieces on Ebay....... So some of you 500 & 550 guys out there may have my parts on your sickle... Whatta trip...

Gotta love it...........

Wow, same thing with my 550. Someone left the #4 plug out.
What the h#%% is with people? It was inside the barn but it didnt matter, the cylinder still rusted up.
Looking good, keep at it, your just slightly ahead of me. I just started cleaning the cases.

Well Spaceman, its still BIGGER then the 1.8gal peanut tank I ran on my 69 Triumph TR6 650 chopjob for the last 8yrs before I had to sell her..

But it's all good, the tunnel is HUGE (so) I think I'm going to tighten it up to get another 40.oz's out of it. But I live mostly in Atlanta where theres a gas station every two feet.

For the long trips I sometimes just bring spare gas (yes I said, "spare gas") You know those large aluminum water bottles, drill a tiny hole to let it vent to the world. And your good to get home, or the next 5 gas stations.

But yeh, your right, it ain't sh!+ till it's actully in one 200 psi water tight piece an polishes up perty like a shiny new penny...

(ok... Put down the bottle, no more for me!!)
