oil capacity, and oil leakage...
« on: April 01, 2006, 04:41:33 PM »
So, I finally got the carbs synced on the four hundred four, and seemed to be adjusted pretty well.  However, it still won't rev past about 7,000.  So, gotta work on that still.  However, now there are more problems.  I changed the oil, and the clymer manual said 3.7 quarts.  I put in 3.5, and the stick said that was way high, but I left it as I have no idea that it is the right stick and cap.  Now though, I have oil coming out a drain hose at the bottom.  I assume that is because it is way too full.  I also think that could be the cause of no high revs.  I don't have the original booklet to check with, and can't find it on here anywhere.  Any help would be appreciated.  I also think there is oil being burnt now, but I think that could be from overfilling.  It didn't leak out the tube until I revved high for a few times.  I hope this is overfilling, and not something more serious!!! :(

Check this FAQ. I too, as have others, gone through the "how much oil is enough" routine. I can tell you 3.7 qts on a change is way too much. That may have been the total capacity for a dry, new engine, but not for routine changes.

OK.  I will try to drain the oil tomorrow, and start with 3 quarts, and see where that gets me.  Thanks!   :)

No need to drain completely.
Just start the bike, and put some sort of pan under the
bike to catch the oil. The bike will eventually pump itself to the
correct amount of oil.

Just make sure it is done before taking it for a ride.
The last thing you need is a oil slick in front of your rear wheel... :o
