Cb550 wheel options - what adapts
« on: May 28, 2013, 01:26:07 PM »
I know everyone loves spokes, but for cleaning and general ease I like alloys, being in the UK parts are limited to find, so is there any options for swapping comstars over onto a 78 K3.

Will the cb550 front wheels swap?

Is there a rear comstar that would swap.

Better still is there anyone in the uk that has comstars who would be willing to part with them?

Sorry for all the questions in one, just there seems to be so little information on this kind of thing it's hard to figure it out.  The other option I have as well is bin the cb550 front end and try to build on a suzuki GS500 as they can be adapted over with little fuss. then I get a big hulking brake and an alloy.

If you swap in a '78-'79 or later front end from a GL1000 Goldwing you get Comstars and twin front disks. Of course it's not quite that simple, you need to convert to tapered bearings and replace the steerer tube from the GL with the one from your 550, but it's very doable.

The CB650 used a Comstar in the rear as did a number of CB450's. So you should be able to adapt one to use on your bike without needing an engineering degree and a machine shop.
