Buck Up Chi-Town ... this is nothing new
« on: February 08, 2011, 10:44:17 AM »
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_localchi/20110208/ts_yblog_localchi/bitter-cold-coming-after-snowy-week

really?  stay inside?     it's not even that cold out, these hacks don't know who they're talkin to

....a wind chill of -20 is nothing to scoff at , but it's not really "stay indoors at all cost" weather by any stretch

i remember in the late 90s we had a week of -70 wind chills ... THAT was nothing to #$%* with, and i still walked a 1/2 mile to my buddy's house (had about 50lbs of clothes on , but i still did it)

for those that have never had the pleasure of a hardcore Mid-west winter ...insane wind chills like that , WILL literally take your breathe away ... it's kinda like whenever you go to inhale air someone puts a super strong vacuum to your mouth and stops you from breathing...

Funny thing is....after coming off a few days of -degree wind chill temps, something as low as 14 above felt like a tropical heatwave!  ;D ;D

Spikey, I got to experience that in the 90s. That was brutal! Hell, even this year, there were a number of times where parts of the upper midwest were colder than yellowknife Canada. now someone might say "so?" , but they need to remember that yellowknife is ABOVE the arctic circle and we are a few hundred miles SOUTH and still get every bit as cold.

You Know one of the joys of being used to cold Temps is that you can say piss on it I'm not going bother, find a good book, top up the toddy, throw another log on the fire, mellow out and less there is something life threatening going on, just forget it and if you boss can't cope with that get a new boss, they weren't very good to start with, it's kind of like a snow day, if they pull the city buses and close the roads there is no point worrying about life, mellow.

Yeah whatevs, I'll be in Hawaii in a couple of weeks.

Seriously though I worked construction in Anchorage AK for a couple fo winters. -40 F and we still wroked outside for 10 hour days. If you complained about the cold the boss would tell you to work harder. Sometimes you didn't want to take breaks cause you go inside and warm up then you don't want to go back outside to work. That was many moons ago. I see the appeal of snowbirding these days.

Seeing the weather channel in Buffalo all the time used to make me laugh!  They would always make things out to be so much worse then they were.  We were all used to the blowing snow and cold, so to us it was no big deal.  Anyway now I get a huge laugh out of these Southerners, we got 5 inches of snow down here last month and the area just shut down for 3 days!  They had no idea what to do, oh it was halarious!!! :D

I do gotta admit though, I do miss the snow a little bit.

I have a buddy that was a Meteorology Tech in the airforce and from our combined experiences No I wouldn' make it as a weather type but then I wouldn't make it as a TV personality as well, sample (Hey people look at those silly #$%*ers in the east, they are at it again) Oh yeah Trav-i I lived in the LA area for a little while, and watching the citizens playing Bumper Cars after a skiffle of snow on the San Berdoo freeway was interesting, they had no clue about road conditions, none.

i just moved from elgin (40 miles west of chicago) to austin tx. and let me tell you, they shut this city down for seriously a fraction of an inch. people driving 20 miles an hour in a 60. news reports telling people to stay indoors, sand trucks out making roads beaches. Ive been driving in bad winter conditions for the last ten years. this was insane that people had no idea how to act.

Chicago gets 24 inches of snow, 2 days later the streets are cleared. if you wernt at work and didnt call in you were written up.

Austin got .78 inches of snow, my girlfriend and i were both called to not come into work, pipes burst, fountains froze and i dont think ive laughed this hard at the news in a long time.

stay warm my mid western brethren
Wake up, look up, there's a warmth up there

T'other night it was -4 here with -25 wind chill. My department had to do night qualification at our outdoor range. We did it. Took four hours.

Weird...I still got my fingers. :-\
