Newbie Oil Leak
« on: April 18, 2006, 03:06:46 PM »
Hi all,

I have a 750K5 and it has an oil leak.  The previous owner told me about it and told me what it was back in January when I bought the cycle, but I can't really remember what he said.  This is probably because he could have told me it was the muffler bearings and I wouldn't have known the difference.  He seemed to not think it was too big of a deal, but he said he had put a lot of work into it already and didn't want to take it apart to fix the thing.

Here's what I know: it leaks down the kickstand and leaves a little pool there.  Apparently it's leaking enough that it looks like I might want to top off the oil.  I think it's leaking more since I had the oil changed (yes, I know, I'm a wuss for not doing it myself - but I haven't bought any tools yet and it's hard to turn screws with your fingernails), but that's probably because the guy used Rotella T synthetic blend (insert gasps).  I was mad at first and I certainly don't want to start this discussion, but I must say that it shifts much smoother now.

Here's my questions: 1.  Can I top it off with regular old gas-station shell oil or do I need to get more Rotella T?  2.  Any idea what it might be and how much it would cost for me to have someone fix it (if I tried to do it it would leak much more oil than it does now)?

I can't fault the guy - the bike is in great shape and runs quite well.  Plus, he threw in a stock set of exhausts that are in pristine condition.  Bonus.

Thanks in advance and you guys are GREAT.  I've learned a lot from all your posts and I hope to learn lots more this summer - but during classes it's hard to fit anything more into my brain.

Sell those things on Ebay to pay for some new parts for your scoot !

P.S--> Rotella T is what I run in my TurboDiesel Excursion  ;D
Run some normal honda oil, cant help with the leak though.

I am sure someone will chime in to help ya out....

I've just done battle with several minor oil leaks on the left side of my 750. Possible candidates are; shifter seal, alternator gasket, transmission gasket.

I was convinced, because mine also had oil running down the side stand it was the shifter seal (closest to the stand was my reasoning). Turns out I was mistaken. Best way to be sure where the oil is coming from is clean everything really well over there, then dry it really well. Then spray some aerosol foot powder around (tip from a board member) and go for a ride. The leaking oil will run down and clean away the powder and you will be able to trace the leak.. or leaks in my case. As for oil on the side stand, it was coming from the alt and trans gasket leaks and blowing back on the stand when I was riding.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.
