Need ideas for front fender on 78 750 SS
« on: February 13, 2011, 03:53:55 PM »
This big chrome thing stands out like mad!

With a bike that is so blacked out it looks really strange having that big chrome monster up front.

Anybody have ideas on a replacement?  Anybody successfully paint one?  Any direct replacements?

Been looking but haven't found anything.

Also it doesn't rain here so can I just take it off?  I'm thinking this provides support for the forks though if I'm not mistaken.

Paint the fender black--scuff it up a little and lay down some Rustoleum gloss black--I did that to mine

i bobbed mine.

drilled out the rivets, rotated it backwards until the front holes matched the rear, drilled 2 more holes for the front bolts, then installed with machine screws w/finishing washers.  filled the 2 rearmost holes with the same bolts/washers.

then cut off about 7inches of fender.  left just enought to mount the fender stays.

if removing the fender, i'd install some sort of brace for those weenie 35mm sticks.

what about a cb400f fender like this one you need to use the bracket from your original i believe

I painted mine with a hammered gray metal color rattle can spray job after roughing up the surface. It has chipped some but the beauty of using a hammered metal finish is that you can touch it up without seeing any difference between the old and and new. Actually, I've painted most of the chrome on my bike with it. If you want a lighter plastic fender you can go with a 750/900 DOHC fender but you have to remove it from it's bracket and remount it on your original bracket. That's the next step I'm taking.

I would much rather just take it off!

Hmmmm.....

I would think it would need a brace for sure.

That's what I did.  Remove the fender and bought the brace from FastFromThePast.  Rebuilding the front end as we speak.  I'm liking the naked look so far.

Carpy makes a bobbed one out of fiberglass, I picked one up and drilled out the rivets on my stock one and re-used the brace. It held up well all last summer and still looks good, paint was a breeze.

Can you post a pic of the clamp that holds the brace on the back of the stock fender. I has an NOS fender & brace but the clamp is missing and it is not listed in any parts diagrams.-

If you want, I'll look in my "leftover" parts bin to see if I still have the clamp and screws.
