I can see it being a smart idea to have some sort of protection for towing, fuel delivery, etc...
does anyone carry roadside protection? if so, who would you recommend?
motow through the AMA seems to be the cheapest at $25 per year, not sure if you need to belong to AMA though?

I am with BCAA (The British Columbia affiliate of AAA), I got the "premium" coverage, whatever that means, and it cost $130/year (CAD$).  I gotta say that I am definately glad to have gotten it, and really feel like I have gotten my monies worth (2 tows, 3 jump starts this year).  Being with AAA I was covered anywhere in Canada and the US.  If your just going to be around town you may not need it, but if your going to do any travelling I would say get the best coverage you can afford.
