Got mine out fine, (thanks to all the threads on here, thanks guys!) Now that I'm going to re-install, how many people re-punch them, to make them stay in, OR is Lock-Tite a suitable substitution? Thank, John. (CB750K0)

I had the same quandary. Decided LockTite even the soft stuff, is there regardless. The stakes are there, then gone with drilling. I went with staking. Got a tiny punch and did it. Only 2 though, not 4. 4 seems overkill.

I just put mine back together last night, I didn't do either.  I guess I should go hit it with the punch, once will be enough.

Just curious. Honda did four stakes and one can reasonably assume it did the engineering behind it. The suggestion here is to do less, based on what? Maybe Honda was just covering it's butt, but wouldn't a rider/ mechanic do the same, if not more so since it's HIS butt?

What about a dot of red paint on the edge after installing with a good firm torque.  A glance at the red dot will indicate all is good or loosening.  But it does take a memory for a pre-ride check.

yes, some had 4 stakes, and some were 2 stakes, (front wheel maybe) and you're right, they had a reason, I guess I'll do the same. But there IS something archaic about pounding on it so it won't loosen! I'm kinda thinking that the lock-tite would likely be fine....

My point was that the locktite will interfere with the next maintenence done by you or the next owner. You may become that cursed PO.   

While the staking drills out and the retainer comes off un-impeded.

Take a center punch, the one with the point on it. Set the point in the crack where the threads of the retainer meet the threads of the hub (where the original stake was, just offset a little into some fresh area). tap the chisel a few good whacks, to where it goes down about 3 threads worth. That will bung the threads enough that it won't turn. And you can drill it out again later. Easy Peazy, don't overthink it.
