I was right there with you today.
My fucin face hurt :P

I'm on anitbiotics and Ibuprofen.

I was told today that Ibuprofen and Codeine fit the same pain receptor, I have some codeine pils, but what causes the pain is the swelling.
Ibuprofen reduces the swelling, so bobs your uncle without the narcs.

Seems to be working so far :P

Wow, you guys must really suffer.  I've had two, and they were relatively quick, and completely painless.  The dentist put this barricade thing in my mouth that kept all of the crap from reaching my throat, so they didn't have to use Mr. Slurpy, that vacuum suction thingy.  Then, he simply bored down thru the root with a flexible-bit kind of drill and packed it with something, done and done.  In and out in about an hour or a bit more.

When it was all done, I don't think I even needed any Ibuprophen or nothin'.  I mean, the nerve is gone, so there ain't nothin' there for to give you no pain...  :)

Hang in there...

Kirk

I think the difference is in whether or not they do the whole procedure in one visit or in two.  I've had several root canals (unfortunately), and only had serious pain after the first one.  That one was done by an inexpensive dentist, and took two visits, not including going back to get the permanent crown.  The rest were done by an endodontist and were done in one sitting, and I never had any pain after.

Just a word of caution, if you have ever had any kidney problems avoid ibuprofen like the plague , it isn't very good for the kidneys, i am not allowed to take it at all and thats a shame because it is great for bad headaches...

my pharmacology is a bit sketchy and we have a pharmacist on here for that matter, but codeine will cover a higher pain threshold than ibuprofen, just like oxycodone covers a higher pain lever then hydrocodone. As far a root canals go, if I see a patient that has no insurance but wants to have a tooth, many times I refer them out for an implant. success rates for implants are around 95 percent. pretty good odds IMO.

Mick, I'm glad you said that 'cos I remember having a discussion with a doctor about that when I mentioned that a product called "Nurofen" did wonders for my migraines but I felt as if someone had used a baseball bat on my kidneys afterwards. The twat denied all knowledge of such symptoms.
Now I just use normal Ibuprofen 400. Usually does the trick.

Wonder if kids today will ever need root canals.  The stuff they do with teeth nowadays is amazing.  They even have TV's on the ceiling for them.

I always ask my dentist for dentures, he always says NO.

#$%* you guys are lucky... my wisdom teeth came in when i was 19 ish. no room and the teeth in front of them broke  :o
so after 7 years of pain i finally got dental insurance, and an infection... ended up having 10 teeth pulled (wisdom included) still need work done to 4, but no more insurance means no more dentist  :'(

They had to knock my ass out for 10 teeth though, kind of nice since i woke up in the passenger seat of my truck, or at least thats the first thing i remember. pudding and ensure for another 2 weeks, ended up losing 20 lbs. but i didnt have 20 lbs to lose. i looked like a tweaker, swollen cheeks and literally hadn't eaten in weeks. worst part is i can brush and floss 3 times a day and still end up with a #$%*in cavity. damn weak teeth.

Now for some bad news  :o .... root canals are apparently not good for life ... I had mine (3) redone last year after twenty years ... the cost to redo was more than new ones because of the difficulty in cleaning out the old filling material.  The endodontist only did the root canal ... I had to go to my regular dentist to have permanent  ::) fillings put in.  Sort of a dental feeding frenzy in my wallet.
