Hi There Everybody,

I've recently finished up a big restoration of my 77 CB550, and wow I've defiantly caught the bike bug. I've been doing a lot with the bike in the milder days that we've had over the winter. And I can't get enough.

So I've been looking around for another bike to keep me interested as well, once I have the 550 certified and legally on the road I will probably lend it to my girlfriend since she seems to be really into bikes since I got the 550 last year.

And as you can tell by the title that's the bike that I'm looking at right now. I've made a trip to the sellers house to take a good look at the bike. Here's what I found out...

-been in storage for 18 years, so since 1993.
-all kept in storage with fresh oils and lubricants, etc...
-hasn't been dropped,at least from looking at the areas that would touch ground if it had.
-34,xxx miles
-seized brake calipers ( not attached to rotors)
-clean exhaust, no discoloration around headers.
-no discoloration on engine
-mostly just surface rust on the frame and dust everywhere...

is not running but only due to no battery and carbs pulled off...as the seller says.

I did a test of the electrics when I was there with a tester and they seem to be all be working fine.

Oh yes and he is asking $600 for it, includes ownership, etc...

That's the major stuff that I could get when I was there and I was hoping that anybody else here could give me some insight into the bike, such as problem area's and so forth.

Hopefully if there's no huge problems that come up when I go and take another look at it then it will be my next project.

Dont' mind me if I'm overstepping my bounds, BUT if you like your girlfriend, don't lend her your bike.  Every new rider falls...

$600 for a non-runner CB750F is, well, as high as I would ever go.  Check the ignitors, the 750s had the black 'melty' kind.  They will fail, so expect to replace them with red 'non-melty' ones from a CB900F or CB1100F. 

Did the charging rotor read 4.5 ohms when you check the resistance across the to rings? 

Whack the brake calipers with a rubber mallet to loosen them up.  If they don't move after that, best of luck...

Does it have stock carbs and the air box? 9 out of 10 times, it will not run well with pods on stock carbs because they are CV.

Put it on the centerstand and check the comstars for true.  The aluminum rivets can fail under stress.

Yeah, now that you mention that...I think it would be best if I didn't lend it to her.

Just as i thought, $600 is pretty high. On the other side since I probably won't have access to a vehicle to transport it back to my house he is offering to deliver it no extra charge.

I didn't have a chance to test the charging rotor in ohms so...

As for the calipers, they were rusted together but from a deeper look it seemed to be more that they were just squeezing on each other.

Yes, it did have the stock carbs and air box. And the carbs were clean too.

I'll be going back later this week to talk with him a bit more about it and hopefully I can take a deeper look at the bike.
