Guess brent is blushing with all this attention, it is really impressive for a first season out, we all know how hard is to bring a new race bike into the sweet spot, keep it in one piece and of course ride the wheels off the thing

Hey guys thanks for the kind thoughts.

The idea behind the magazine interview was that my little story might spark interest in other people (like me I quess) to get out & go vintage racing. It was the idea of one guy I pitted with at Mosport that races both vintage & an XR1200 in the national series who is involved with marketing for the VRRA. It is an attempt at increasing membership, certainly not to pay homage to my limited talents.  ::) But for Tim... I'll sign your copy for a drink at the banquet buddy.  ::)

I have the magazine here but never had much luck scanning these things so I'll leave it to someone with some of that kind of savvy. Mike, if Deb gets to a store that carries it there may be no copies left anyway!  ;)

I received a couple more pictures and seeing that's what this is all about here goes. This is how close we were most of the P3 final. That's the young gun who won on a GPZ550.





Here is how close the bellypan comes. It just barely touches the weld on the way by. (back exhaust side)






This is when Henderson got by for good in the P2 final. He went inside & I outside on a lapped rider into the lefthander of the chicane. I tried to stay ahead of him but went in way hot & tooo deep and finally had to straighten it up and exercise my motocross skills. I told him I tried to get back by him anyway I could and we nearly pissed ourselves laughing.   ;D  Not very flattering, but that's racing I suppose. Of course the joke around the pits later was I should install a mower deck.

Jimmy, he has stock bars on that bike so it's a real "sit up & beg" position. He's fast indeed.

Yes, Lee is one of the faster guys in the club. The Period 3 Superbike class requires the bars to be attached above the yoke. They look kinda goofy to me, but I guess that's how they ran them in the early eighties. He gets around the track pretty good for being so high up on the bike...

Very nice, peeks my intrest in racing but i dont think i own  bike that fits into any class at the AHRMA. Maybe ill start looking for a pre 72 125 twin.

Edit: Looks like my cb550 will work in the Formula Vintage 500

I wonder if someone could show me a picture of cylinder sleeves grooved for separate fire rings, as well how the head gasket surrounds these o-rings? I believe MRieck groooved the original billet blocks, any view of these? What do you use for ring material? On the 500/550 Cometic's gasket is a sloppy fit, oversize holes around studs, bore holes didn't align, o-ringing might be a solution. No one is willing to spend the money on tooling to produce MLS gaskets so with higher compression copper is the only answer.

I did a leakdown and lost air through the gasket on both 1&2 so no useful numbers. I had 7% loss on 3&4, figure this might be borderline ok to re use piston rings, but this gasket deal needs a re-think.

The pic clearly shows where my air & oil leak originated!

My cylinders run .032 stainless safety wire Brent. .040 stainless wire can be used as well. That groove can be cut about .060 (inside edge) or so off the bore edge into the sleeve flange. The wire will definitely hold the gasket in place and eliminate slippage.

well, the copper HG in my 500 held 4 seasons, annealed it with a torch every time it was off

expect it to sweat a little though... spraying both sides with HT paint helps a bit

Well Jeez... that's good to know. They've been telling me, "yeah, they're next in line" for 9 months. Last week they told me they were scattered on the mill table and would be done by the end of the week. Now it's the end of the next week. Time to find somewhere new to use?

It's kind of a shame about F by G. I've only used them twice but the work was excellent and turnaround time the same. Hopefully whatever problem they're having gets resolved.

Part of my gasket leak issue is that the machine shop that I used originally screwed up and had to make new sleeves. After the first race I pulled it apart found the sleeves had settled. At that point I did try pressing (gingerly) to finish seat them and them worked the deck straight on a surface plate. I expect the sleeve top flange edges weren't chamfered and I find that they have settled ever so slightly again.

That said I expect the gasket is possibly thin in one spot because both times the leak is at exactly the same spot. The stud holes are too large on this Cometic gasket, which to me leads to sealing issues, (check the pic)plus the bore holes were "only close" to matching the cylinder. It required some work.  :P I may o-ring  the sleeves this time and call Cometic to see if they can help with a better copper head gasket or I'll look elsewhere.  I will say Cometic offers viton coated steel base gaskets in different thicknesses that are excellent.





CB & Mike mentioned using copper or SS wire for a fire ring. Do you overlap the wire ends or just let them meet flush? Too bad there isn't a place to buy one piece fire rings. I foresee more trial & error figuring the groove depth & wire thickness to match the head gasket thickness I'm using.
