Saturday afternoon Momma Nature arrived with a deluge of rain, winds & hail. The mid prod heat race was in progress on the 2nd lap when a rider crashed which brought out a red flag. In the VRRA an ambulance will not roll until all riders are stopped at a marshall station. While everyone was pulled off the rains came. When the marshalls finally allowed the riders back to the pits Jeff & Ty were at the beginning of the steep uphill straight and neither could get their bikes to light pushing uphill. They had to wait until all the riders came around then turn and bumpstart downhill. The Honda was sputtering heavily on the way back to the pits.

It eventually cleared and the sun came out and it was announced the race was to be re-run. We scrambled around drying foam filters, draining floatbowls in case water got sucked in, dried the ignition box & all connections and crossed my fingers...all was good.

Brent,

That was great! 2 reasons to be proud, the bike sounds fantastic and Tyler rides it to the edges very well.

Another great head by Mike!

What's harder, getting to the lead or keeping it?

Oh I don't know Jerry, it depends on the length of the race and circumstances I suppose. Following someone closely puts pressure on them to maybe make a mistake, but the same is true if you're being followed closely. Then if you're behind someone of a similar speed it can eventually take away the ability to see past and you fall into "follow me mode".  ;D Knowing there's a place you're faster can allow a last lap pass which is good if you don't trust the other rider or if he has an advantage somewhere else.

I always found I could put my head down & turn a couple hot laps once I got to the front so that might be my preference!!

TG, here is an idea what races in our P3 Lightweight bump up class. early TZ250's CBX550's, KZ & GPZ550's, Pantah's and TT2's for example. Rain tires, radials, and even slicks are now allowed in the class, but as a P2 bike we're on our Avons.

THREE CLASSES OF PERIOD THREE SUPERBIKE:
Lightweight:
250cc two stroke water-cooled
400cc two stroke air-cooled
550cc four cylinder, four stroke
650cc two cylinder, four stroke
unlimited single cylinder, four stroke

Good question, but probably the "J" model. I've seen a few in the class through the years but rarely.

thats a strange place to cut it off i would have thought it would have been with the g .
a good h or j [not much difference in them ] with a set of hummel cylinders should be the bike that wins that class .
a 250tz has a proper race frame makes 67hp and weighs just over 200lb, with a good ridder on it would be very hard to beat .

No argument here Simon, a well ridden TZ250 is a giant killer, let alone a bunch of street based 4 strokes.

I'll find out next time the cut-off model. I do remember getting by one on the last lap at Mosport....when he pulled off with a mechanical issue!

P3 cut-off is 1982 Simon, so the TZ250J would be the last produced to be eligible.

i think a better cut off would have been 79 for the tz . the trouble with letting a j in is you can use allot of latter parts made for the tz500 engine which had a very long life in sidecar form .
dont worry though brent if i get any inquiries for tz cylinders from canada i will tell them to get stuffed !

Ha thanks Simon. The class cut-off is 82, but not sure individual bikes are all the same. Will check.

Uhh-Ohh. I've watched this tiny crack on the edge of the plug hole in the #2 chamber. I wasn't sure if it was right through because in years it never seemed to change. Now it leads right to the edge of the exhaust seat plus there is now a gap between the seat & casting.

Crap.

Jim is a Jedi with stuff like this. If it can be fixed it would be him to do it. Assuming you have a pretty Penney in the head already it's worth a try.

Any other updates Brent? Changes for next year?I know we have discussed some on email. Many of mine are coming soon. You?

Not way ahead of you but I did send an email to Jim.

I always have changes in mind, but I still need this engine & head configuration.  ;)

Chassis wise...Bought a lightweight rear TZ disc, will mount on a front hub & wider rear rim, maintaining my minimal cush drive option. A few other minor changes in the works like relocating the ignition box to a "drier" area and enclosing that section from water infiltration. Every time it's wet there is no end of water & corruption that ends up in that under tank area.

You mentioned the TZ disc, I am interested in seeing how all that comes together.

So I have never removed valve seats. If I tig a nut to the seat, then heat the head to 450 or so, will a slide hammer pull them out?

EDIT; I spoke to Mike & he suggested welding an old valve to the seat so the guide can maintain center while it's driven out (with the head hot) The guides are being replaced anyway.

brent, have no direct experience with seats but one tip i heard is to "weaken" them by grinding two opposed grooves so they can collapse a little bit.

Great photos.  Think I see a 1973 Kaw Z1, 1974 TZ 250, 1974 and 1976 TZ750, and a 1975 0r 76 Harley/Aermacchi 250.  I ran my first race in 1974 and remember those machines well.
