So I have never removed valve seats. If I tig a nut to the seat, then heat the head to 450 or so, will a slide hammer pull them out?

EDIT; I spoke to Mike & he suggested welding an old valve to the seat so the guide can maintain center while it's driven out (with the head hot) The guides are being replaced anyway.

brent, have no direct experience with seats but one tip i heard is to "weaken" them by grinding two opposed grooves so they can collapse a little bit.

Great photos.  Think I see a 1973 Kaw Z1, 1974 TZ 250, 1974 and 1976 TZ750, and a 1975 0r 76 Harley/Aermacchi 250.  I ran my first race in 1974 and remember those machines well.

Yes Jimmy Dunn rode the Aermacchi, plus was a Yamaha team rider for a time. Frankie Juhan was a fast privateer that gave the big names fits.

Those were obviously 2 stroke years but It was the beginning of superbikes and they raced Unlimited Production. I raced my CB750 some but mostly an RD. I was broke most of the time!

Martin, I'm trying to remember if this was indeed 1976. I think so because it must have been the first year for the works OW31 because I remember ogling Steve's, and we left Vancouver the fall of 76. Certainly there were only a handful of those offered to factory riders, and they were gorgeous. Titanium fasteners everywhere and magnesium as well. The one pic with Juhan & Baker shows some of the differences.

0.005" stretch. Poor man's stretch gauge, but finally moving forward. The head is in good hands, feeling much better about that. I'll get some pics up later.

No these are my Carrillo's. That other secret project got shelved when I found that combustion chamber crack.  ;D

How are you handling things? What do you have for immobilization, do they still apply casts?

Looks great Brent and glad to see it back together. Recently saw a CX rebuild where they changed one of the brake shafts and lengthened it and in doing so it was supported further out.  They also nodded the shifter and built a support for it as well. The lengthy shift shaft reminded me of it.

Good luck with the coming races, I hope Tyler is successful in his campaigning the FZR and your CB550.  Safe racing!

David, there is a needle bearing support for the outer end of that shaft.

                                                                 RACING AT THE POINTY END

This may look absolutely foolish, but this morning I'm still riled up. When you race to win there will be crashes along the way.

This past weekend both bike & rider performed well, four wins, a 2nd and a 3rd.  However last race, two laps to go and my bike & rider is trailing the leader. He's a young gun, and we know to be wary of him so a last lap pass (or finishing behind) is safer than mixing it up with this guy. I saw the vid, he's on the edge, missing apex's, running wide, under the red mist. Then a plume of smoke, a shower of hot oil in a 90mph corner, my rider down with three others. Carnage, but all the riders are up and ok. My guy is beat up but will make his own wedding in six days

That's racing they say. Yeah right, I'm still allowed to be pissed.

He has a lot to learn about racing. Maybe he'll get there too some day. You know Simon that (often) your closest competitors are the guys you can trust the most "in tight"... some you give a wide berth.

I had one guy tell me Friday that very GS engine was nothing short of spectacular. Ti everywhere. Yeah well not so spectacular afterall.

Brent,

I LOVE that Team Waller races clean, but races hard and to win.  AND with a bike that is both clean enough to eat off of and live amongst the best of the Barber museum collection. You have my respect👍

I’m sure that makes it extra hard to see her all banged up, but Tyler is OK, the rest is noise(perhaps a loud annoying droning noise🙄)

Edit: perhaps that kid on the GS will be out for the rest of the season recovering from that broken big $$$ engine leaving the track a bit safer for a while.

George

P.S. should a I post the carnage picture?

I don't care George, pics don't show everything.

What I can say is Tyler had his GoPro stay on the bike and the footage is something else. Gives a perspective most will not see about how quickly bad #$%* happens.

Man there is something serious called "race craft" and that guy doesn't have any.

Simon,

Brent’s talented son Tyler has been the designated rider on the silver/blue bullet for a while now.  It’s a real family affair.  Tyler at the helm, soon to be wife Kellsey is always there lending support, plus team owner and crew chief Brent and his lovely wife who selflessly volunteer during the races.

Most anyone should be jealous of their situation(crashes excluded😉).  I’ve been to one of the big races at Mosport and the Wallers were clearly very highly regarded VRRA members and fellow racers.
