charging rotor "rollers" missing??
« on: February 16, 2011, 07:03:15 PM »
hey all!  so i just got an e-mail from MReick in regards to balancing my charging rotor.  This is what he said:  "The charging rotor was missing 2 of the rollers. All 3 springs were there but 2 rollers were MIA."

I took the rotor off and mailed it to him, without taking anything else off!  everything looked ok, so i need to know what's going on??  anyone have any ideas??  i attached a picture of the microfiche for the rotor, is he talking about parts 8,9 and 20??  please help!!  thanks.

Yeah, I would say it's 8 &9 that are still there, and 20 that is missing. These act to release the starter gear as soon as the motor spins up if memory serves.

strange that only 2 are missing...  i'm going starterless, but i might as well fix the problem before putting it all back together in case i want to re-install the starter.  i have a 2nd rotor sitting around, i just need to get it off the crank, damned bolt won't budge!

Once the rotor and starter gear are removed those parts just spill right out, so yes, it's strange that only two are missing and that they all didn't roll under the table or down the driveway as they have done to me ;) :)

haha, well pre-teardown, the starter was in tact and working...  HMMMM!!  guess i'll just have to strip down the other rotor and swap the parts.  hopefully they're all pretty dang close in weight so it won't throw off Mike's balance job!

At tear down is when these things have gone "running away" on me. Once the rotor(#11) and the gear(#6) are pulled off the end of the crank and separated, those rollers just spill right out. The shoulder of the gear(#6) is what holds the rollers in.

If you had the rotor on a work bench by itself, or walked in the house with it then it's likely that is where they got lost perhaps? At least that's how  I lost mine, and I ended up finding them in the tall weeds along my driveway ;)

nice!  thanks for the "tip", i'll have to take a look, but it's doubtful i'll find them...  i'll look on and under the workbench and if not, then just use the other one as a donor.
