PM TurboGuzzi, he lives in Milano (near Modena). There are some great Motorcycle sights to see in that area... Ducati museum in Bologna, Moto Guzzi museum (Milano, I believe?), Paton workshop is in Milano... he could give you good advice.

Florence is nice, Modena is nice, Venice is very touristy but still nice to see... haven't been to the other places. If you go to Bologna go to Pizza Toto. Best pizza in my life, and that beats the most famous place in Napoli.

All very very nice places to visit. My favourite is Venice of course. It is a very strange city and if you stay any length of time there you could be immune to the sound of approaching cars........'cos you never actually hear them there. I stayed at the Hotel all'Academia. But that was 30 years ago. Also try to wander off the beaten track and go eat where the locals eat. You won't be very welcome but you might get better food and cheaper price. Try the "Pasta alle seppie nere" squid ink pasta.......horrible to look at, but delicious.
Furthermore, as regards eating in restaurants; don't order fish on a Monday (it's usually been delivered on the previous Friday, and frozen over since). Try not to use the motorways, use the minor single lane roads and check out the eateries where there are trucks parked outside. It won't be glamourous but it'll be good with big helpings.
Read up on medeival history in general and on the reneissance in particular before you leave. It'll give you more appreciation of the art and sculptures and traditions of the area. Florence is steeped in Reneissance art.
I love Assisi too, lots of "pink" building blocks gives the place a pretty surreal appearance.
Italians are very friendly, but can be rather aloof in the north. (They HATE tourists in Venice but can't exist without them.) They love to try to speak to you in English, it's a status thing........so more than a few words like Please, thank you, hello and good-bye, I wouldn't get too worked up about the language. Unless you want to, of course.
Always always watch your money, purse, and valuables. Keep them out of sight. Even in the car. Just use your common sense.
If you ever get into trouble, call the cops. Thhey're generally give the benefit of the doubt to tourists.
Be polite and patient with every one and they'll love ya to bits.

Just south of Greve is a little town called Panzano, where there's a crazy butcher named Dario Cecchini that has a very small restaurant where you sit family style with strangers and indulge in about 8 courses of various meat dishes, washed down with a variety of wines and liqueurs and finshed off with sweet olive oil bread. Sooooo good. Make a reservation.

Calcata is about an hour from Rome.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcata

I had some wild boar pasta that might be the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. They only have one restaurant on the plateu.

also checkout couchsurfing.com . I dont know if youre going alone or with someone, but you can meet up with people in just about every city in europe for a drink or just ask for cheap or off the beaten path places to eat/sleep/etc. Theyre all different ages and classes on there. I use it and have made some great friends.

I think I can vouch for you so if you are interested in the site pm me and ill give you my name on there. There are many people on that site that are in whatever age raneg you are and can help you out for sure.

When I was in venice, they were doing pretty extensive repairs to several dozen buildings. Its also very cramped, but the sights are very nice.

depending on how much money youre spending, hit up a barnes and noble and read soem guide books for ideas as well. I use to use lets go but they got bought out and suck now. lonely planet is for people on a shoestring. Rick steves is a bit goofier but targeted at middle aged folks.

I'm Italian and have been there three times, it is awesome!

Here are my picks:

Roma - Go to Piazza dei Fiori at night, it is a wild party!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campo_de'_Fiori

Civita de bagnoreggio - The wine tasting room in a cave! Just ask when you get there. Really enjoyed our day at Civia, nowhere else like it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civita_di_Bagnoregio

Orvieto - awesome church. Award winning white wine too. I remeber having dinner in a cave, very cool!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orvieto

Modena - wish I had gone there, look into a tour at the Ferrari Galleria!
http://www.ferrari.com/Italian/About_Ferrari/Museo-Ferrari/Pages/Home-Museo.aspx

Venice - Do it, go for the gondola ride! Enjoy the evening in St Marks Square. Go to Murano for glass blowing.

Have Fun!!
