Sand Cast Models - Worth?
« on: June 13, 2006, 01:31:52 PM »
I have an earlier original Sand Cast CB-750 with 12,000 miles on it and I was wondering what it was worth in today's market.
Just curious...

Hard question to answer without pictures to judge the condition.

Is it all original?

$100 - $44,000....depending on condition.
need engine & frame VIN numbers to verify year/model.

What's "early"?
If it has the honest real actual sandcast engine cases and they aren't cracked around the sprocket, then it's worth a lot just for them. A lot of early bikes had the cases replaced - with diecast cases of course - when a chain break ruined the cases. Collectors and restorers will pay a good buck for a frame plus a sound engine with correct numbers regardless of the condition. How much "exact to spec" original equipment you have - switchgear, brake hoses, fenders, exhaust... there are a hundred or more oddball "sandcast" parts - and what condition it's all in makes the difference between a $2000.00 bike and a $40,000.00 bike.

Actually the earlier ones are worth more than the later ones.  There's approximately 88 differences between the early ones and the late ones.  An early one with correct parts is worth much more than a later one with correct parts in the same condition.  Also, the original ones in good condition go for a lot more than restored ones of the same vintage.

I've got a 72 bike but the engine serial number doesn't match the frame number.  The engine number is CB750E-1111190, does that mean its a sand cast engine because I think that serial number is from the 71' model.  or is my bike worth nothing because my engine serial number doesn't match my frame number?

Go to this link for frame and engine numbers by year. The engine and frame numbers on these bike will not match. What they will have is a series of engine and frame Numbers for each year.

If you are interested here is another good site that describes modifications by serial number.

my frame number is 21xxxxx and my engine number is 1111190 so they clearly dont go together. my question is, is my engine number the correct number to make it a sandcast engine?

Sorry, like you fear it's worthless, but I'd still give you a hundred bucks for it if it still has the original exhausts.
