Need rear set advice for 73 cb500, I have pics!
« on: February 17, 2011, 02:52:03 PM »
Ok. So I have a 73 CB500 with some cafe'ish things done to it. When I got the bike the previous owner hobbled together some rear sets from the passenger pegs and who knows what. They feel like garbage and the shifter rod tends to bend... even though I replaced it with a much thicker stronger one. All the angles are off. I like where the pegs are I just need some "rock solid" rear sets that I can bang around on without having to worry about snapping or bending a shift rod.

I am very new to this and would really appreciate some feedback from you experts.

Buy a set from a modern sport bike if you don't mind the looks. Or buy the linkage from a modern bike. The spline is the same, and I'm sure you could make it work with a few dollars at home depot and some quick thinking.

The rearsets I have, from a gsxr750, has an aluminum rod, and it's a lot stronger then the threaded rod you can buy at home depot or lowes.

Others will be envious of your sturdy rod  :P

I like those loaded gun sets.... But your right... it still doesn't solve my wimpy rod. Now that I'm looking at it I think that its all in the angle. The very small hinge on my current rearset has too much leverage, is pushing the rod more down than just across. I hope I'm making sense. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on those rear sets and linkage from Dime City. Ill let you guys know if this cures my flaccid libido.  Lets all hope it stays hard for more than 4 hours.  8)

also try to make the rod straight without a bend to it. the bend will want to keep bending where a straight rod will resist it more,
