new guy
« on: February 19, 2011, 07:03:42 PM »
Hey everyone. I am the proud new owner of a 73 cb750. it looks like a burnt orange, unknown of the exact color code. I got it from someone today for free. I got tired of driving by for the last 3 yrs and seeing it leaning against a fence. I offered him 50 bucks and he said sold! When he looked for the key he couldnt find it so he just said i could have it. This will be my second 70's era cb. the 1st being a 75 cb 400f that i rescued from my uncle tony's shop when i was 15 now im 33. If your from daytona bch you might know him from Tony Foster's PCS daytona. Bike is pretty bad off but mostly intact. I will post pictures tomorrow. About me. I am a 15 yr vet of the US Army. Originally from orlando fl, now stationed at Ft Leonard Wood, Mo as an unarmed self defense instructor for the military police school. i have an 07 cbr 600 rr that i race in the CCS AM HW and MW series. Last yr it was the great plains region and now the midwest. i will be getting restationed in korea this june and then to ft stewart ga (just south of savannah). i am also a grad of MMI hontech program in 2002. I am happy to be here and hope to learn as much as possible.

First off, thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do!  Second, welcome to the forum.  Thirdly, you posted pics of the wrong bike!  ;D
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Can't beat the price on that one!!! Looks like it would be a great project. I don't know if I'm hallucinating or not but what is the Kerker can mounted to in the third from last pic??It looks to me like the brake stay rod. That can't be!!!!!

70s flashback. The original Kerker meg would have that tab on the meg on the rear passenger peg. The PO felt the need to move it back so with the extension of the collector area, the tab has been pushed to the rear 4 or 5 inches. Maybe to clear some saddlebags or such. Seems to me he then ran a hard wire from the tab to the rear peg mount, where it is now floating uselessly.

It never ceases to amaze me the condition of some of these finds. Truley ... uh... amazing.  ???

Yeah its essentially hanging off the cylinder head. Not good.  If you didn't already know, many pipes with rearward megaphones, run a strap up from the tab to the top shock mount. That would make it stable for sure.

if you look closely right in front of the rear peg the pipe is rusted through. not sure if its fixable. i would like to keep the kerker.

That strap they give you to mount it to the top shock mount really looks like sh!t in my opinion although it is a good mount. My Kerker is kind of a Frankenstein affair but it mounts to the footpeg/stock exhaust hole on the triangle.I also have a centerstand stop mounted there. I'll try & remember to take pics of it tomorrow.A few years back...I thought about fabbing a plate that could be bracket or u-bolt mounted to the tringle that you could put holes in where you needed them for rear footpegs/Kerker can. This plate could even be chrome plated. I think that would look alot slicker than that strap to the shock.

Looking back at the picture....I now see the wire you're talking about and also the extended pipe at the collector. I wonder if a guy could cut that out of there and make the can shorter which would bring the mounting tab on the can closer to the footpeg mount. If you look at the picture....you might see what I was talking about it looking like the tab was bolted to the brake stay rod!!!! That just wouldn't work!!

Yeah that might be good. Might allow cutting out the rusted part, restoring it to its original length and mounting point. I did have to do a double take on your observation, it does look like it may be bolted to the stay arm. But I think it is rather just hanging, or was hanging, from that wire. Which at that angle doesn't really give much support.

Here is a pic. of mine. Cheesy but it works. I have no intention of leaving it this way but I would never do the strap to the shock thing.

did a little work today.  motor seems locked up. i went to pull the plugs to try and oil up the cylinders a little and there was so much crap in there i decided not to pull them until i get here pressure washed. so i started with the front end. i guess out of sheer habit i might have pulled in the front brake lever cuz the front wheel was completely locked up. i had to pull the whole wheel off and spray pb blasteverywhere to start freeing up bolts and such. poor thing looks as if she is leeking from everywhere. got the tires aired up and soaked the chain so she would roll well. oil tank seems empty. the left side of the bike where the shifter/kick stand/ footpeg is covered in black oil. unsure if she has been leaking slowly for the last few yrs. i have decided on a resto-mod instead of a full restoration. she will be black, no chrome except for small trim pieces, and no badges. depending on condition of tank i will probably just fill in the spots where the honda badges go.

If your engine is locked up.......leave the bike together and use the back wheel to turn the engine over while in gear. You should remove the plugs and pour a mix of acetone and ATF into the cylinders. I haven't tried this yet but lots of people here rave about it. Just let it soak in for a few days and work it's magic. When you start turning the wheel....don't force anything. I would say turn it gently back and forth. I have a 750 K1 that needs this treatment but its on the back burner for now. Good luck with it man!!!!

What mrbreeze says and +1 on the acetone/atf mix. Much better than about anyything else.

Now it sounded like you have the head off already to see the piston tops? What you are referring to as the "heads" is the cylinder block. With the head off there is nothing holding the cylinder still. If you go to rocking the engine with the rear wheel, you'll likely raise the cylinder off the crankcases and the psitons may still be stuck, at least a couple of them. And you'll now have a bigger mess.

I would set the head back on, with the used gasket for padding, and put several of the head nuts back on. Now when you rock it to bust the pistons loose the cylinders will be held still by the head. Get it?

I think I jumped the shark, er thread. Somewhere was a thread of a guy who had pulled his head and was looking at the piston tops. My response was meant for him. Sorry.

Welcome!
The empty oil tank is very common on these bikes when they sit for long periods of time. There is a check-valve that prevents the oil from draining back into the dry sump from the tank, but they tend to leak. Over time, the tank is drained into the sump. If you were to fill the tank, then start the bike, the scavenge pump shoves all that oil into an already full tank, and you end up with oil everywhere. (I've never made that mistake. ;) )

The oil on the left side may possibly be from the automatic chain oiler, located in the center of the counter-shaft.

I agree with mrbreeze and MCRider about the ATF/acetone to un-stick the motor. While I've never used it myself, I have read of many successes. Be aware that when the motor does break loose, the mixture will come flying out the plug holes. I don't remember for sure, but I think the distance record is 12 feet or so.

A coupla years ago at work,I had a guy come in with a Chevy K5 Blazer that got away from him on a short cliff. It landed on it's snout and when he got it back on all 4's,it wouldn't turn over. He towed it to us and I found it to be hydro-locked. When you take out all 8 plugs and hit the starter....you would be amazed how far a 454 piston can shoot cylinders full of gasoline!!. Of course I disabled the ignition before doing this..............that woulda made a hell of a show if I didn't!!! ;D
