cb750 K2 source for new or working steering lock?
« on: February 20, 2011, 11:23:31 AM »
Thought I had better start to chase this one down....does anyone know where I can obtain a steering lock and key for my K2?  I painted up a triple tree for my bike and knocked the old seized one out first....now I am begining to wonder how I will get another one back in without the use of a hammer?
In my own experience...
It wasn't a Previous Owner who didnt know what he was doing that messed up your bike, it was The Previous owners mate who THOUGHT that HE did.

All using the same key?
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

The fork lock, if it comes in from the bottom of the lower tree, as i think the K2 does, simply slides into place. You need a key to do it though. You remove the cover with the little Phillips head screw. Then stick the key in, turn it and instead of pushing up to lock it, pull down and it comes right out.

Reverse to install.

Anyone listening to this, I need a steering lock of number T6546 or T3729. I have the ignition.

Thanks for that MCrider, I had a hell of a time getting it out, as it was seized solid and the key wouldn't turn it at all, tried everything to get the key to work, in the end I had to drive it out, hope that aint going to affect how a new one sits in there as I have allready painted up the trees. I bet I end up buying the lower tree off someone just for the lock and key... Oh no, My tree has brand new tapered roller bearings fitted as well,if I buy a secondhand lower tree I will end up having to buy those again...

10 or 15 years ago, the locks were still mostly removable. I think the last 10-15 years has really degraded the quality of the stock of used bikes, a lot more corrosion and seizing of parts.

Indeed MC, indeed, I think especially in the UK,(and especially Wales)  where our weather is poorer. Dig this; Two years ago, (because I was working outside on a car) I started to become aware of just how many days of what I call "good weather" were not happening. (no rain, no wind, where one could be outside in comfort in the sun , wearing shorts and a t shirt) So much so I recorded them in my diary.
There were 14, yep a whole 14 days with no rain, no wind and sunny and warm.
Being especially aware now, and still having work to do on the car...last year, I recorded 11.
This totally depressed me. What depressed me even more was my father coming back to his "second  home" in The UK, because "It's Too hot for him in Missisippi" in the summer.  Grrrr.
Parts from the USA for cb750's (on the whole) are in much better shape secondhand than parts from the UK. PLUS our councils have a habit of salting the roads in winter which totally rots metal.... It's so good that folk are reproducing parts again, and we have dedicated folk like those on this forum...
In my own experience...

The new ignition switch I bought from Honda for my 750 K1 had 2 keys . The ignition key is a newer style with black plastic on the rear . The steering lock key is the old style . No seat lock on my bike . Price was around $125

I guess, I must have said "Indeed" to often!! ha ha....  Stargate was excellent, but my favourite was Farscape...and for sheer brilliance LEXX...   Oooh, I really dont fancy $125 (or the Uk equivalent) for a steering lock and key  .....secondhand will do, as its totally hidden.....
