for all you wood butchers out there
« on: February 20, 2011, 05:45:43 PM »
Recently finished this "quick and dirty" project.  My wife wanted a writing desk and was threatening to go buy one from Target.  Knowing that she would come home with some particle board and vinyl veneer Chinese made piece of crap I told her I would make something and came up with this simple mission style desk.  Of course she wanted it now so I had about 3 days so everything came out of my stash of wood in the basement and it was a very cold weekend so I did not feel like leaving the house for a run to Home Depot for anything.  Now this isn't Norm Abrams New Yankee Workshop with every tool known to mankind.  I used a tablesaw, orbital sander, 9V Makita drill, hammer, pipe clamps, and a paintbrush.  Just simple butt joints pinned together with glue and dowels no fancy dovetails here with the exception of the drawers which were groove and tenon.  The drawer slides are simple wood rails and the drawer assemblies were built separately as were the side balusters.  The top is held on by 1/2 inch dowels at each leg. The wood came from a 90 year old cabinet salvaged from a kitchen demolition with the exception of the legs which came from my stash of 2x4's salvaged from an 80 year old garage demolition.  Beautiful old pine with a lovely color and patina.  No attempt was made for a perfect finish as the wood had it's share of nicks, stains, nail holes, and paint residue in the grain.  Overall I think it adds to the "used" look of the piece.  3 coats of clear waterbased varnish(it was what was on hand) finished it up.  The only expense was the two drawer pulls.  I am finding I don't have the patience for labor intensive fine woodworking anymore so this is my new mantra "quick and dirty" ;D
Anyone else have any projects to share?

Nice Job!! Even though done in a hurry under pressure you've got a good A&C interpretation going here. Like your drawer solution. Hope she appreciates what you've done. Sooo much better than what could be picked up at any big box store.

I love the re-purpose thing.  I have some knotty pine, tongue and groove 1" paneling and some 55 year old 2X4s waiting for just the right project.

The wood came from a 90 year old cabinet salvaged from a kitchen demolition

Superb work, looks great!

My FIL is a master carpenter.  A few years back he used the wood from kitchen demo at my wife's childhood home, to build us new cabinets for our current home :D  We re-used all the old hardware too, rustic country-style hinges and pulls.

Anyhow, your desk turned out great.

Nice work.  Maple seems almost as hard as oak.  The pine is a treat to work with. :D  I built a canoe about 30 years ago, the only one I did and then sold it to the ex girlfriend.  That was dumb. ;D  Did you use cedar(white?) for the canoe, or some type of pine?

Have thought about building another but we are pretty rough on our current fiberglass canoe on our wilderness trips so I have held off.

Wow nice work all!

I finished rebuilding a staircase here last year. It was the biggest thing I've tried to do but I am happy with the way it turned out. Took the better part of a year. Rebuilding a staircase is very disruptive on the household. The original was carpet covered crap so everything had to be replaced. I used veneer on the main sides (don't remember the proper stair terminology) and reused the hand rail and the smaller turnings but had new oak balusters made that fasten into the sub floor frame so they are completely solid. The treads are new, oak with jatoba on the fronts. The top landing is newly floored also with oak. I had an extra tread made in case I made a mistake so at the top inset it into the top landing.

Srust58..........yes I used White cedar.anywhere from 17 ft to 3 ft lengths when I build,it is hard to find good long lengths,on this one it was all 17's

My wife got stuck sideways on some rocks and punched 5 holes in the side of the Kayak that I built,covered the holes with duct tape and then finished the day.....we don't baby our boats but they don't like real rough use.

Sometimes I find Hard maple harder to machine and especially harder to stain/finish then oak,it can be blotchy..

Cookingdaddy......those stairs look nice........lots of hours for sure

Ha, Ha, love the muttwood/dogwood thing. Very funny.

Hey, Tramp, here's a link to a photo (magazine cover) of an adirondack chair from Norm Abrams. It's a really good design and very comfortable to sit in. I actually did the article and built the chair at The New Yankee Workshop. Anyway, I could get you or post a copy of plan if you'd like. Here's the link:

And that stair work is awesome. And it IS a lot of work.

I especially like the slight variation on the side balusters.  Just a small detail but different than the usual equal spacing.  I have a 1923 bungalow so that style of furniture really fits.

   Nice work here guys. I've been working wood in one way or another for most of my adult life. Here's a link to the artist thread of last thing I finished that I have pics of. There's been furniture, another clock near completion and some sculpture done since then.

I work all day at a custom hardwood millwork company for my $$$.  Now I hate wood.  My old house and furniture are falling apart because I just want to wrench some bikes when I get home. ;)

Okay, so I seem to be addicted to, of all things, forums!  By far I spend the most time here, but #2 is the Wooden Boat Forum;

http://forum.woodenboat.com/index.php

Some beautiful boats being built there, most builders post pics.  But another one related to the subject at hand is Old Wood Working Machines;

http://www.owwm.org/

It only makes sense that if you're into old bikes AND wood butchering, you'd also be into old wood working machines.  And a few months ago, they added a metal working section.  I was drawn there because most of my shop tools are Craftsman from the early 50s.  My Dad bought them new.
