cb550 wiring issues
« on: April 01, 2006, 11:17:31 AM »
okay, i might as well just start this thread vaguely, because i'm likely to have some more puzzles for you sherlocks. here's the situation:

i wired up my cb550F. i used the switches from my '77cb550K, because the wires don't run through the bars. they apparently came stock with a cutout where people like to dremel the others to allow the wires to come straight out the side of the housings, avoiding the bars altogether. before using these, i checked and all of the wires matched on both styles, one having bullet connectors and the other having multi-pin clips. this was no problem, i just got new connectors. i have a few random wires running around with no mate, but this isn't my first problem. (i'm tracking them down in my honda manual PDFs, but if anyone knows these colors by heart chip in...br/red coming from the left switch housing ('77K), bl/yellow coming from the main '76F harness).

current mystery: i have power to my hot post on my starter. the start button sends power through the y/r wire, and the clutch switch sends through the g/r wire, both tested positively, but the solenoid isn't kicking. bridging the posts the starter engages, so it's not a faulty starter. i pulled the solenoid and installed one i knew to have been working, and still no go. what am i missing here?

problem #2 solved (thanks wiring diagrams!). mystery br/r apprears to connect to mystery bl/y as i suspected, though it seems strange that the rest of hondas color codes are match-by-color and that one's not.  :-\ oh well.

Are you completely solved now? Have you checked that everything is grounded properly?

solved in wiring daigram world...not in the real one. still same issue. power to both the clutch and start button wires at the solenoid, but still no start motor. and the neutral indicator is indicating.

i'm gonna just keep answering my own posts:

"hey paul, i have an idea. why don't you check the main connection where the "green" circuit grounds out?"

"i checked for a good ground when i installed the coils. filed the powdercoat off of the frame and everything."

"huh. well maybe you should check it again."

"well #$%*, whadaya know? i forgot to reconnect that damn main green ground. hey! everything works! thanks, paul!"

"no problem."

BE CAREFULL early bikes had a "hot" solenoid that grounded on the bars whilst leter ones hat "hot" bar switches and the solenoid was grounded. hope that makes sense

Theres also a diode under the left side panel. I think Honda called it part of the starter logic circuit.
