CB750F steering damper measurements
« on: February 26, 2011, 01:06:15 PM »
hey guys and gals.  have never fitted one of these before.  bike is a 76 750F.  I intend to mount it from the fork to the frame by the steering neck.  HOW do i take a measurement for overall length and amount of stroke needed?  Are they all made as a pass thru design or are there some made like a standard shock?  thanks for any input.

ASAIK, all the "ram" style ones are pass through.  Im just going to get a clamp for my fork tube, and weld a tab onto my frame where it fits best.  There's some nice ones on Mikes XS, adjustable too!

First things first though, is your front end in good working order??  You don't want to install a damper as a band aid for another problem

nah, front is good, 76 gl1000 front end with all balls bearings, and a fork brace on the way.  just lookin at the damper as a lil bit more security.   I have felt that "warning wobble" a few times on very sudden hard decleration on rough pavement.  out here in the boonies, rough pavement is the norm.   I have lifted the front end more than twice to check the neck bearing and front wheel bearings, which are getting replaced soon with all balls.  I did the rear end  couple years ago due to actual failure of a factory bearing.  forks and seals are good as well.  I do have innertubes tho, and have had wheel balnce checked.  so basically the sterring damper is just for added peace of mind.
