Question on brake master cylinder
« on: February 12, 2012, 01:16:31 pm »
So I took off the old brake master cylinder and am looking for a new setup. I have the steel brake lines that will fit this exact unit from the 76 550. My ? Is will a new aftermarket brake assembaly work or will I need to bypass something?? I don't think the new ones just work with the steel brake lines that are intended for the stock 550 brake assembaly.

I don't want to go blow money on something that won't work together.

well I had my buddy swing by last nite and looked at my bike. I explained I wanted a new master brake assembaly for the 550. He said he's not sure that the steel brake lines will fit a aftermarket newer assembaly. I just want to know can I buy anynew assembaly and it will fit and work correctly or is it not gonna work? I seen them running around 140$ but just want to make sure they will work out just fine?

Okay...think I get at what you're asking.  As long as it takes the same thread of banjo bolt (the hollow bolt that goes through the end of the brake line, the one that you are holding your hand in the picture)  It'll hook up okay.  Make sure to use new washers around the banjo bolt.

Also, if you're going to go with an aftermarket master cylinder, try to pay attention to if it's recommended for a single or dual disc brake setup;  It can make a difference on how the brake lever "feels" as you pull it (too grabby, not grabby enough etc etc).  Hope this helps.

To my knowledge, most (if not all) banjo connectors are the same, and banjo bolts come in either 1.00 or 1.25 thread pitch. This can be remedied by getting the banjo bolt that goes with the master cylinder.

The thing you need to worry about is the master cylinder's piston bore. This should explain it well: http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/89/95/

I know for a fact that 74-76 550s have a 14mm piston bore. I'm 95% positive the banjo bolt is 1.25. To keep the stock feel +/-2 is fine. I got a 16mm master cylinder for mine and it feels great.

Check out pampadori's website.  He does brake lines and he has an MC.  Not the MC is angled for clip-ons or clubmans.

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
