Rubber Bushings for Swingarm/Shocks?
« on: February 25, 2011, 01:21:49 PM »
I bought the Dresda Boxed Swing Arm from Carpy. (check it out HERE)

Only problem is the stock bushings that go into the holes where the shocks get screwed in don't fit properly. They aren't snug and I'm told it'll rattle like hell and drive me nuts. Not to mention one is slightly larger than the other (slightly). I emailed Carpy because I noticed that his bushings are completely rubber (mine have metal on the outside) and he told me I have to contact my Honda dealer to get the bushings.

I really don't want to have to contact the local dealer as it's just a pain in the ass and costs more than it should. Does anyone know where I can get rubber bushings like in the picture below?

Online dealers are pain free. Motogrid.com has them for $4.81 each +S&H. Order up and you'll have them in a few days. They have a metal ring on the outside and inside. I wouldn't use anything else, IMO.

Oops, just re read your post.  you say the "stock" bushings don't fit, too loose? That's what you're going to get from the dealer. No fix there.

Wait, did the swingarm come with bushings that don't fit?  Or are you saying the bushing you already have don't fit properly?

Uploading a video as I write this to show the actual problem.

Also I wouldn't take it out on Carpy. I've bought a lot of stuff from him and he's been more than helpful on plenty of occasions. He ships stuff out on time and responds to emails promptly, thats more than I can say for some other people I've purchased from. He also has a higher volume of cafe orders than most people I'd presume. I notice he gets flak for reselling things that you can get elsewhere for cheaper, but at the same time, that's those people's fault for not researching. I like how if you want the usual "cafe" style you can pretty much buy a lot of what's on his pages. No complaints here.

also I might add that with this swing arm he includes the axel which is a nice touch considering I'd have to buy a new one or use the old stock one.

It's not the fault of your bushings. The holes on the swing arm are too big. They need to be an interference fit. And I wouldn't count on the difference in fit being due to the bushings. Measure them - I'm sure they're both exactly the same. New bushings from Honda will fit the same.

Yeah the bushings are the same. But I noticed the ones on Carpy's site look different am I wrong? They look almost all rubber. Am I screwed or is there something I can do to make the hole small or the bushings bigger?

Slide a piece of a sacrificial feeler gauge in between the bushing and the ring on the swingarm, trim the excess and move on.  Freeze the bushing first and use a slightly larger piece of gauge than fits at room temperature. When it warms up it will be nice and snug, I think.

Right on Carpys site it states it will have new bushings pressed in, heres the exact quote:

" also have the shock mounts on these and also will have NEW bushings pressed inside.

All you do is reove your swing arm and fit your original spiral shaft and bolt, as well as the dust cap and grease cap and there you go
."

I would call hime again and aske for the bushings if they were not installed in your swing arm and if they were you should call to get new ones that fit correctly. If I paid that much for a part I would want it to be correct and as stated in the description.

Just my take on it, but then again who asked.

No no, you're confusing them for the Bronze bushings which it did come with, not the bushings needed for the shocks.

That swingarm from Carpy ain't cheap and I would expect to have a well designed and made part for that price. Those bushings are a press fit and should not rattle at all I imagine some rearend stability will be lost if they do. He seems like a nice guy but don't blame him he's British there's alot to be said about his QC :D

See what he says first but I would probably use some brass shim stock.

Helped a guy out a long time ago with a similar issue. Turned some nylon bushings the right size with a steel bushing in it, he used the setup for years. Make it a tight fit.
There must be someone there who can help you out, otherwise let me know.

Chers, Rob
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

If you and/or Carpy can't find a solution to this maybe look into green Loctite to secure those bushings.

From Carpy:

"I have had a couple do this but I have managed to find some bushings from a local shop from time to time that fits, failing that, you can send me the swing arm and i can then maybe weld another tube ring to house the bushing, As the only way that can stop moving woth STOCK bushings is to tig spot weld them in or, make some Teflon bushings.
I even had this issue on the STOCK original DRESDA I had."

Seems reasonable. #$%* happens, I'm just glad he's willing to fix the problem if it still remains. Now, I have to look for some bushings. If not I'll send it out.

I'll repeat, though maybe this is not what you want to do. I'd freeze the bushing, then insert it with a piece of feeler gauge or shim stock trimmed to fit around or part way around the bushing. When it warms up it will be tight.

Once the clevis of the shock is on it, it won't go anywhere. Seems to me.
