Leather Jacket
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:25:21 AM »
I just picked up a new leather jacket from leatherup.com and I'm curious if any of you guys use waterproofing sprays, conditioners or anything else to keep your jackets looking new. I'm looking for tips and recommendations for products as this is my first leather jacket.

I bought my Hein Geriecke (sp?) leather jacket about 15 years ago.  It came with two spritz-bottles of stuff - one a cleaner/conditioner and the other a water-proofer.  I used them once when I first bought the jacket then never again until just this past winter, although they've come with me through three moves since then!  :)

The jacket was getting a little stiff, and it had quite a few bugs on it, so I thought I'd give it a try again.  Together, they've made that jacket soft and supple as new again!  I was very impressed.  Kinda ironic that I never used 'em all the life of the jacket until now.

Since we ride year-round here in FL, I've ridden probably 20 ~ 30k miles wearing that jacket (among others), and it's hanging in my cubicle at work right now.  Rode in this morning wearing it...

So, that's just for what it's worth...

i used a water proofing spray on mine from a leather store  right when i first got it haven't touched it it 5 years . works great about all you need to do. plus who wants new shiny leathers anyways when they look a little worn they look twice as cool.

Greed. My jacket has a matte finish and I've seen the "gloss sealers". I'd rather not use anything that feels like there is something on it or makes it shiny. I just wanted to know if anyone has noticed a difference between "waterproofed" and not.

I had an old jacket that was starting to loose the black, started to become greyish worn on the sleeves.

I used Murphy's oil soap and it made it look shiny black again.  I would think if you were planning on actually using it as rain gear you would want to get some snow seal.

When my Hein Gericke loses the "black" every decade or so, I clean it with a damp cloth, let it dry, and then use black paste shoe polish.  Soft rag and work some in then buff it with another rag.  I bought the jacket in '84 I think.  I may have used some mink oil at some point, but don't recall for sure.

Ladies sell the stuff I use too.  I have attached a picture of the lady that sold me my Kiwi shoe polish below.

I've bought two leather bike jackets over the past few years at Goodwill. Paid about $30 for each, both were Wilsons so not too shabby. At that price, just replace them.

This is the best stuff around!  http://www.mtpitchblend.com/ournaturalproducts.html

I used it on my leatherup jacket I have as well, only about a year old, and it made even that SO much softer and helped waterproof it some.  It's not going to do well in a big storm, but the occasional spell you might pass through won't affect it.  I could always get their waterproof stuff though, but I don't ride in the rain much.

Either Huberd's Shoe Oil or Shoe Grease.
