Far too many good engines have been ruined or at least damaged from bad fuel pump pouring gas into the oil pan. During years of messing with antique/collector cars, if it had been sitting a good while or if I even suspected a bad fuel pump, I simply replaced the pump. Too many of 'em will run great while diluting the oil and burning the engine down.
I'm sure I've thrown many good pumps away but it was very cheap insurance. I put it in the catagory of allowing an engine block to freeze and crack for the lack of a bit of antifreeze. Neither one is very smart.
I'm sure we've all screwed up more than once during our years of enjoying cars, trucks AND motorcycles. I know I have.
