I should mention that Ohio is one of only four states that doesn't inspect the quality of the gas at the pump, the only inspection is to check the volume of gas sold. No legislation to protect consumers from sellers sticking us with poor quality fuel.

Two-Tired

Thanks for the info and link on Octane. (I keep learning stuff - now, to try and remember it!) I'm getting old, you know!

I use non-ethanol when possible but it's hard to find here. Even at 7 cents higher it is better. 'Doesn't really matter on the bike but ethanol cuts 10 to 25 percent on mileage in these 4.6 Crown Vics.

Wish the gov had found some other way to rip us off!!! And, the ripple effect is rediculous! It would have been far cheaper and better for all of us just to pay the farmers not to raise corn! (Like they did for not raising hogs.)

Ethanol if gasoline is pure crap!

did some research on that pure gas website talking to station owners and a few chemists i know that work at bp. essentially if your state has mandated up to 10% ethanol, unless theres a sticker on the pump that says contains no ethanol(at least in ohio), theres ethanol in it. it plays havoc in marine motors so the only places ive found around here to get eth free is at marinas. and you pay over 3.75 a gal there. sometimes closer to 4 bucks a gallon. i personally use sunoco 94 in my bike but when im away from home aka mi premium up there is usually 91 and ill fillup with that. and i keep a flask full of race gas as an 'octane booster' dont know if it actually helps but it makes me feel better. not claiming to know everything but i personally hate ethanol and did some searchin to see what i could find. the marina i work at in the summer gets a lot of business from ethl use (i rebuild carbs) some of the older marine motors wont even start if ya put gasahol in em. we usually take good marine gas to check that one. 9-10 times thats the solution. phone conversations usually go like this Hello? yeah my boat wont start. OK did you fillup at a street station or a marine station? street it was cheaper. OK how olds the motor? late 80s early 90s dont remember. okay we can come and take a look or try some gas from a marine station and call me back. ok bye. some time later.... yeah i called about my boat not runnin. oh yeah did the gas do the work? yep thanks for the quick fix.
the gasahol is stupid and they really need to offer a choice. maybe we should start a petition to put it to a public vote!

KO's and K1's if I remember right should be run with a higher octane than modern 87.

Why would that be?

What does using a far higher octane fuel than your bike needs make you feel better about?  Increasing the octane doesn't do anything to offset the negative effects of ethanol, if that's what you're getting at.

i live in ohio and the octane rating is not quality controlled by the state, i do not trust what is on the label therefore i go with the highest rating. also use an ethanol test kit to see how much ethanol is really in the fuel and the higher octanes usually have less. the bike is also its happiest and gets far better mileage on the higher octane. 2 summers ago i did 2 tanks of each grade available except the 100 street gas at sunoco. the mileage to price ratio was far better with the premium fuels than with the lower grades, saving me money. did the same with the car but the price difference was nill. not to mention my plugs fouled like crazy on the lower grades. i will run 89 or 91 in a pinch but will not put 87 in the bike(unless it was that or not get home). its more or less a personal prefrence for me.

I use 87 octane and my bike told me that it prefers it sans ethanol.

I was in a town called Westmorland, Ca. a few years ago. Bombed out little spot on the  map, remind you of somewhere foreign, third world. But lots of access to off road  RV, dune buggy, three wheeler, MX areas near Salton Sea in the Imperial Valley. It appeared the only business going on in the town was a new Super8 hotel and a couple gas stations with lines of Winnebagos with toy haulers. They sold race gas at the pump.
