Teach me about the side cover diamonds
« on: February 18, 2011, 07:20:27 PM »
I have thing now about knowing about the diamonds.  The differences, the changes, the years...

To be honest, the first ones I have touched are the ones I got from Frankenstuff.  They are perty awesome.

Are these normally more than one piece? If these are more than one piece, can y'all post some pics?  Is each side held on by two or three of those fasteners?

I have only seen what looks to be orange and red for the actual diamond part.  The edges look to be a glossy black but with a chrome edge on the edge of the diamond.  I have seen silver and black wings.  It think the 69-70 had the large black and silver diamond with the wing and 750 engraved in them.

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Tipper, at the risk of sounding obvious, have you had a look in the owners galleries? A quick study there will answer most of your questions.....
In my own experience...
It wasn't a Previous Owner who didnt know what he was doing that messed up your bike, it was The Previous owners mate who THOUGHT that HE did.

Thanks fire!

So were the edges (chrome/black) any different from 71 to the last?   I don't think I will see the close-ups I need from the galleries.  Are these one piece or do they separate into multiple pieces?  Are these mounted with two pins or three?  The galleries wont show this.

So in general, my questions are not exactly obvious, especially since I have never touched or or seen them up close.

I guess you have not seen my transparent blue and clear diamonds.  I also have an interesting new set of diamonds I have not unveiled.  I want to paint the edges right and found an interest in them since I am doing this.  As you can see, the edges are all silver when there should be black in them as well.  If I had known this after I posted this pic the first time, there would have been black edges too.

Yes, I know the wing tip is facing the wrong way in this pic.

PERFECT!  Exactly what I needed.

I see your base is silver and the edge of your diamond is silver unless I am missing the black due to the angle or light.

So, the pin on the diamond does not go through the side cover.  It just snaps into the base.

Curious, does the wing look like it would pop out or does it look like it is engraved in the diamond and painted?  That wing is a PITA to paint when engraved.  It is doable, just hard to get the edges right.  I know, who is gonna look that close, lol.

If I see it right, you have a KO and K1 diamonds.

Thank you for doing this fire!

The 750four script looks chrome on top.  I got mine from LPM and they are all black plastic. I like the script vs. what came on it.  Trying to figure out the trick to get those to look better with paint.  The trick to the tank emblems were easy to figure out to get the nice straight lines on the edges.

Hi TipperT,

...it is engraved or it is a inlet that is chromium plated if I look from the side to the diamond the top is absolutely flat.

I found a company that is able to do a real chrome look BUT I have to pay ~20Euro for the gas tank script :( so I can buy a new one for that price.

Have a good one...Georg

Both the red 1971 and the orange 1972-76 diamonds have black paint around the outside.  This is from 2 magazines from the 70s.

Hey Tipper....I just went out to the garage and popped a few pics of mine. Black around the edge of the diamonds. I painted the scripts around 4 yrs. ago and they still look good. I bought small aersol cans of Duplicolor auto touch up paint....black & white. I took almost all the hairs outa 1 of my brushes to get into the tight spots. I used one of those tabletop magnifiers with the light built in. It was tedious work but like everything else on these bikes....rewarding in the end!!

Thanks MrBreeze!  I see the black edge on yours and what look to be a chrome around the edge of the diamond.

I painted the tank emblems and they turned out perty good.  I see originals and wonder if I should have cleared them cause they look so shiny.

Here is how I did the tank emblems;

-Naturally, I stripped all the paint.
-Sanded a bit
-Sprayed the whole thing primer
-Sprayed the whole thing gloss black
-Took a microbrush and dotted the white paint in the letters
-Did the above again.  Dotting it let it fill and smooth out its own.
-Went over the inside edges of the letters with the microbrush to make sure I got them covered.  I let the white come over the top of the letter but not over the other side.
-Took a single sided razor blade and ran it across the tops of the letters.  That gave it the perfect looking edges for both the black and white paint.
-Then took a fine sponge sanding block over the top of the letters again.

They came out better than I thought I could do.  The microbrushes have no bristles so none to leave behind.  I tried paint the diamonds I got from Frankenstuff using a magnifying glass but my perspective was all jacked up so I did not use that on the tank emblems.  I have +2.25 reading glasses that helped my eyes see better and I did not have the perspective issue.  I should get some stronger ones for the keck of it, lol.

I didn't do my tank badges. I just stripped the paint off of them and installed. I haven't decided what to do with my tank yet so I will hold off on the badges till then. The tank I'm runnin' has dents and very clean on the inside. I got this tank on Ebay a few years ago. The original tank that I got with the bike is very dent free and horribly rusted on the inside. I don't know if I can save it but I plan to try one day. Kinda down on the finances as of late so the tank project will have to wait. At least I can still ride with what I have but not in any kind of shape to do BOTM!!!! In this pic...you can see the dent in the middle of the bottom by the trim. Also has one on the right top from fork hitting it (the way it was when I got it).

Just realized.....thats an old pic of my bike with the original gaitor forks on. I now have the newer open style. Georg.....I like the look of your tank emblems with the black instead of white. It wouldn't be right on a proper restored bike but mine isn't so I would run them black no problems.

Hey MrBreeze, that is the first time I have seen your bike.  Nice bike dood!

The reason I brought up the tank emblems after your post was because the style emblems on your side covers look like it could be done in the same method as I did.  Not to say that yours did not turn out good, in fact they did!  I also thought I would throw in the microbrushes cause you mentioned the bristles.

I love the scripted side cover emblems.  I do like the original for the year too.

I am having a hard time figuring out the trick to paint the scripted side cover emblems and make them look good at the same time.  Still working on it.

Here is a bad cell phone pic of one of the tank badges I did.  It is just one of them but they turned out the same.  Hopefully you can see the edges of the letters. The spot in the top of the "D" is actual damage to that letter.  Who knows what the PO or POs did there.

Were the little bumps in the letters visible in the OEM versions?

Tank badges came out great Tipper!! Thanks for the compliment on my bike (it is my baby!!).I don't put up alot of pics of it because I'm kind of an older fart and a bit computer/camera challenged but I'm slowly picking things up!!
I wish the side cover scripts were made of metal instead of plastic. It would make them easier to restore.I just went out and looked at my tank badges and they do have the little bumps in the letters. Here are a few more recent pics of my bike. These are pretty much how it looks now except for the bobbed rear fender I did about a month ago. I'll get some pics of that soon and post.

Tipper, I did not say your question was obvious!! I said when answering, "at the risk of sounding obvious have you had a look in the galleries" That meant that I was saying I might be giving an obvious ANSWER!!
I was trying to help... Sometimes folk think of things that might have been overlooked...
I was genuinely trying to help... and a picture paints a thousand words and sometimes does answer many questions...a whole load of folk have sent you pictures?
