You don't HAVE TO split the case for this. There is a shortcut but it involves a dremmel. You cannot just pull the seal out as it is similar to a small fork seal, hard plastic outer part with a spring going around then the seal.

What you do is to cut out a slot big enough to turn the seal sideways and remove then you have to reverse the process and glue the seal in with something. The seal is about a quarter inch wide. If you drop the seal inside the engine then you'll be, at minimum, dropping the oil pan. If it's not in the pan then you can try to get to it from the top but again, may or may not find it. If this doesn't work then you'll be splitting the case.

Try this first. Pull the push rod out and clean it up with some 000 steel wool. There's nothing on the other end so it should come straight out. If the rubber part of the seal is buggered up then this may not help but it's at least worth a try and its a whole lot easier and faster.

How many miles on that little jewel?  Judging from the pictures it looks to be a low miler in pretty nice condition.

A little over 17,000...I bought her for $400 as a good condition, non running bike...but, not sure if this was/is the only problem but the fuel line was not hooked up correctly...it was going into a breather tube as best i can tell instead of the main fuel inlet by carbs...so she was running nicely in my garage.

the po came pretty clean on everything...at least what he knew...I told me of the oil leak which i figured was the countershaft seal or the pushrod seal...i the latter would have been easier to deal with but it was the countershaft seal...after taking the drive sprocket off you could watch the oil the leak out from the countershaft seal...no mystery...but I had remembered someone from this site saying you could do it from the outside so at the worst, I just though a pain in the butt repair but doable...well, I don't its doable on the bike...the seal is shaped much differently then the ones on our sohc 750s and i do not want to tempt fate by damaging the crankcase try to pry it out...anymore then i already have.

I hope to be able to enjoy my sohc for the first full summer this year so this baby can be my project...I think she's pretty sweet even after realizing i have to split the cases but so far, she is easier to strip down than our 70s bikes...so far at least.

Hey Ron. Got a 750 engine over here with a second gear issue. How about I drop that off Saturday morning and be back in the afternoon after a few beers at the pub and pick it up done. Hear your getting good at that,a real pro.  ;)  ;D   Eric
