neutral light not lighting
« on: April 02, 2006, 11:49:39 PM »
ok I tore into my electric system (1982 cb650sc) and got my headlight working (cleaned thumb switch) but my neutral light is still not funcitoning

here are the symptoms and what i have found so far.  The light did work and had recently gone out when my headlight did. I took apart the instrument cluster and exchanged the light bulb and cleaned everything out and had the bike in neutral as well.

the socket is getting the full 12volts (tested with a meter) so I beleive the switch is fine still.
All wire connections seemed to look good. all other indicator lights work fine.

I think the problem might be with the ground wire from the socket (green/red i belive) but I'm not sure.

Also the clutch saftey switch on my bike is unhooked and the wires for it twisted together (so the bike will still start). and it appears there is a ground wire not connected to anything in the read of the bike near the regulator/rectify thingy(dont think that this is related though)

any suggestions/help would be good.  I tried browsing the forums and didn't find too much relating to this

edit: just looked at the wiring diagram and it seems the grren/red goes directly to the switch? if that is the case then that means the the switch is grounding the light when in neutral thus lighting it correct? so maybe it is the switch....anyone know where that can be located at?

Do you mean the switch itself on the bike, or the switch itself as a part to purchase?

the switch{neutral } mounted on the engine case is a grounding type switch
that makes the indicator light come on. you can put a meter on it and
shift in and out of gear to test .{no change ,replacement time} you should get a wiring diagram{see FAQ"S pages}and a
{manual} for it . for the wire color coding/routings , then remedy whomever played
       with the wiring before you got it.{much better than just trying things.}

           Hope it Helps

I had a neutral switch problem on my 82 CB650SC  (same bike).  It turned out to be the switch under the chain cover (#10 in diagram).
The contact has a sandwich of an isulating material between brass plates, with a rivet in the middle which makes the contact.   My guess is the rivet corroded and so contact was lost.  As a short term fix I soldered a wire between the plates.

cool I'll take a look at it today.

The thing worked fine before I started monkeying with the cluth basket on the right side of the bike.  I'm hoping this is something small I can just quick fix for now and get a replacement later.

update: something apparently has eaten the wire going to the switch down by the shifter....go figure

I'll have to splice in a new wire at some point i suppose...

I have a similar issue except in my case the light comes on in second gear and neutral.
I think the shifter drum is not indiceing quite right.

Oh well, another problem to fix.  ::)

How do you properly test the neutral switch? Can you still do it while it is installed in the bike?

I was hoping for a answer here as well.
I have power at the bulb, but no ground so light does not work.
When I shif into another gear I still have power at the bulb, still no ground?

Is the problem in the headlight housing somewhere?

HA!  I am a GOD!
RED/WHITE wires disconnected in the headlight bucket. Same as the 1st post, I was dicking around in the bucket one day when my headlight went out. (Bad ground there as well).
