Aaaaaaargggghhhhh!!!!!!!!
« on: April 02, 2006, 06:08:54 AM »
I've spent a whole week and most of this weekend, trying to find out why my '76 F won't charge.

I've done the lot. rewired bad sections, cleaned connectors tested the rectifier.
Swapped over magnetos and stator coils,
Nothing.

Today I was looking at the wireing scheme, (AGAIN!!!!!) and I noticed, more though desparation than anything else, that the symbol for the regulator has a larger space between two of the pins.

So I had a look at the regulator and yes the space between the pins is bigger. On the diagram this has a green wire to it, mine bike has a black one connected.

Swapped them round and bingo!!
SOMEONE HAD PUT THE CASE ON UPSIDE DOWN!!!!!!. (Sorry about that - bit stressed).

Anywho - it charges now - Wahooo!!!.

Congratulations! Feels good to solve one, doesn't it? Go for a ride if you're at that point.  ;) My hat's off to you. Whenever I see a wiring diagram, my eyes glaze over.  :o

What suprosed me was that you can put the lid on upside down. The japanese are normally a stickler for locating pins here and dowels there and one connectors every where.

A simple 3 connector box, thats will totally F#*k up up if it's wired Ar£e about face.

:D good find man! reminds me of trying to figure out, for weeks, why the 350 wouldn't turn over - EVERYTHING had been checked...

then my buddy, who i'd enlisted out of frustration, discovered that i'd flipped the tiny spark advance cam around when sliding it back onto the points assembly...he was just trying random things when this happened to do it.

there's no guard against doing that one either and it's nearly impossible to spot.  :P ::)

junkie out.

It's been my experience that, more often than not, this is usually the case when tracking electrical gremlins. The reward is besides fixing the problem, that you learn quite a bit about circuitry, which helps next time. Congrats!
