New guy from Canada
« on: September 18, 2006, 06:41:16 PM »
Just a quick hello to introduce myself. I'm the proud new owner of a CB750k5. It came with a Windjammer SS, but that had to go, so if anybody needs one......   New tires and countershaft sprocket, insurance and I was on the road. Hope to squeeze in some more riding before snow falls around Halloween. This should be fun!     P.S. Great site!

Welcome old76cr.

I haven't lived in Ontario for 30 years but if I remember correctly, Timmins is in the snow belt. Ya better get those miles on quickly and safely!
Time is short!

Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!.........reminds me of Wyoming.....get ready for the snow to fly.........around 2002,I left my bike in town because I had a few too many.I left it at my bud's house for about 3 weeks and then it started getting cold(late Oct.).So I show up to get my bike one day and I only have to go 5 miles to get home.It was 28 degrees...I have a jacket gloves and shades....no helmet!!! Not too bad for the first 2 miles getting out of town....the next 3 miles are highway and man......it was a cold SOB!!!!!!!!I got home and parked that sucker for the rest of the winter!!!!!......jumped into the pad and got up & personal with the wood stove RIGHT NOW!!!!!! I have been back in California now for almost 3 years and although I miss certain things about living out in the boonies.....The winters ain't one of them!!!!!!!

When I lived in Canada, most of the snow was just outside of town (Vancouver, BC).

Now, we won't see snow for another two months (or more) probably (Santa Fe, NM), and even then not much in town.  But I can tell you that with the temps hovering a little above freezing when I leave in the AM, and the 80 mph ride on the interstate, that's one cold ride!  Have already started wearing a balaclava and lined gloves and fleece inside my riding shell.  The altitude makes up for the southwest location.

My K7 had a Windjammer SS on it as well....I wonder how many 750's had Vetter fairings on them at some point...he sold hundreds of thousands of those fugly things.

I retract that...first snow can be seen on the mountains above town today.  Very pretty site as I ride up the interstate.  :)

It's getting COLD on that ride.

What do you all wear for cold rides?  When I get to school/work, I don't have much time to strip and change layers.  I also don't have much place to store the stuff until the ride home.  Often, the AM ride is freezing cold; and the ride back is mild.

I'm not sure what the temp was this morning in Toronto, all I know is, I was half frozen when I got to work this morning - about a 15 Km ride.  It was cold enough that you could see vapour coming out of your mouth when breething.  My little trick is patting my engine at stop lights to warm up my frozen hands.  I wish I had heated grips!  Instead I just put my hands on my engine for about 1/2 a second and take it off...repeat until you feel warmth! :)  It really works.

As for those fairings - yes they look ugly, but after this morning's experience I'd bolt one on in a second!

Thanks for the warm welcome eh ! All this talk about riding to work makes me wish I lived farther than a 6 minute walk. Another blast around town today. Don't know how fast or far I went cause my speedo's not working ! (gauge not swimsuit) Supposed to go down to freezing tonite. No wonder Shania left.

regarding the speedo (the gauge not the swimsuit, as you said yourself :) )

That was the first problem I had with my bike as well.  Well, aside from the fact that it wouldn't start and took a month to get running, once it WAS running, I was riding along, having a blast on my new ride, and all of a sudden the speedo goes to 0...  I pulled over and found out the cable fell off.  I put it back in place and about 10 minutes later it was dragging on the ground again.  This time, the cable inside was broken, so I had to get a new assembly.   Luckily it was a cheap fix - picked up a new one for around $10 - but not before I rode what I guess is 300Km without a working speedo, using the tach to gauge my speed.  This was actually a blessing in disguise, as now I'm able to tell the speed simply by my RPMs, which is a little more usefull.
