CB 750 F1 Crankshaft Shells
« on: March 01, 2011, 03:00:12 PM »
I'm restoring a 1976 F1 and whilst I'm not particularly mechanically challenged, I can't make head or tail of the manuals as regards the fitting of new shells. What goes where? Help!! ???

OK - quick lesson that may help understand the manual.

Get the letters stamped on the front on the crankcase and the letters that are etched on the crankshaft (thats the difficult part reading those). Check the bearing list and find what bearing each set of letters correspond to. Order the appropriate bearings. Install them with Plastiguage. Measure the flattened Plastiguage and hope they are within tolerances which they probably will be. Clean the Plastiguage off the shells and crank and reassemble the bottom end. End of story.

Try to post up the crankshaft Japanese chicken scratching and we'll decipher it for you. Always MUCH easier the second time after a trained eye deciphers!

It's really that easy but you won't believe it until you've done it the first time. Now you can ask better questions hopefully.

Thanks Griff,
BBBBB stamped on the crankcase and AACCA on the crankshaft weight.

A few days ago I opened a topic with a similar question, maybe there is some handy info in there for you? http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=84715.0

Some crank dimensions also can be found here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=30801.0

The letters are indicating the bearings from left to right (left being the gear shifter side and right the rear brake pedal side).
Using a nice table form the manual you get these bearings (left to right):
Green-Green-Brown-Brown-Green.
