What OS are you running? Will it allow you to "roll back" to a previous checkpoint? Have you tried rebooting?

Did it work before and now it doesn't, or is this a new printer to this computer?
If it used to work, what did you change?  (Installed updates, added/removed a program, etc?)

Try a different cable and port just to eliminate those variables.

Could try rolling back to a restore point.

In device manager for the driver, see if there is an option to go back to previous version; I've had a printer that worked but when driver updated it 'lost' it.  When I rolled back to previous driver it 'found' it again.

Man, these computer issues can be SO frustrating!

If running Windows, try this;
Leave printer hooked up.  Run Windows Update.  Don't use "Express(Recommended)",use the "Custom" button.  When it get to where it says how many "Important" updates are needed, look to the left and select "Hardware".  If running Vista or 7, navigate to the "Optional" settings.  See if your printer driver is listed.  Select it if there.

What may have happened is that your computer "forgot", and the driver that came with the printer is no longer good enough.  It's worth a try.

Have you tried a different USB cable?  They do go bad sometimes.

If we are to think of this as a software issue, we need to know what Windows you are using.

I'm going to guess Windows XP. From the Start menu open up "Printers and Faxes", right click on the printer in question, select the option "Use Printer Online". Sounds like it is currently set to "Use Offline" so simply change this setting via the right click option menu.

Go to HP or other software site to see if you can update the driver or install a new one.

Some HP printers are kind of fussy. Disconnect and uninstall the printer. Reboot, run the updated printer install you downloaded from HP, do not connect the printer until prompted to do so by the installation routine. Some HP printers don't install properly if you connect them before running the install routine. Good luck (damn computers..) >:(

i work for a tech support company. sounds like a driver issue with your usb port. and if its an older computer, and maybe newer, take a look in the usb port to see if anything has snapped or wiggled loose. and hp printers are notoriously bad. the cheaper ones are made in a different place than the more expensive ones. quality is all over the board.

USB issue on the PC is my guess.
Need OS and service pack.
Printer model.
Many have suggested doing a system restore back to when you last had the printer working.
Have you tried this? Do you need instructions on how to do it?
We'll get you through this.

BTW I work tech support also and have only seen this on HP home printers. Usually the All in one printer/scanner/copier models

Go to start menu and click run. In the run box type services.msc
This will bring up a listing of all the services running on your computer.
Scroll down and locate the print spooler - right click & select restart.

This sometimes works.

Do you know that the printer is working? Try it on another computer? You don't need to install the drivers but if you just plug it in and power it on and Windows recognizes that something has been plugged in, that would be a good sign. If no signs of life on another computer, your printer is dead. I think you said it sat for a month?

On the computer i just replaced the USB ports all slowly died, not too sure why but one by one they failed.Try plugging a USB stick or something else in the port and see if it is working, if it is I would delete all printer info on your computer and do a reinstall with new drivers, make sure you have the current service pack on your system...
