All balls bearing install question 75 cb 750
« on: March 06, 2011, 11:06:48 AM »
Getting ready to install my steering bearing set from All Balls and my problem is that I have no old bearings/or races to do the comparison/stack that they recommend, when I bought the frame it was  completely stripped of everthing including the triple trees and races. any suggestions or ideas on which spacer I should use  would be appreciated.. thanks

I used the same kit and the thin spacer is what I needed for my K4. There is a great 21 page tutorial on this forum with great pics that is very helpful. Click the link:

I put the kit in my 550 using no bottom spacer at all and the thin one only on top.  I could have used the thin one on the bottom, it really wouldn't have made any difference other than this - if you do use a spacer on the bottom it is then possible to remove the bearing and seal without destroying the seal, but if you don't use any spacer at all then if the bottom bearing has to come off you will destroy the seal getting to it.  Just something to think about.

I used all the items in the package I got on my 75 750. Not sure if that was the way to go but it all fit. There is some play in mine now though. I think maybe I didnt get the races set correctly. There is a guide somewhere around here done with a 750.

My bearing install seems straightforward ('78 750k) but I'm a little surprised they expect me to be able to modify the spanner nut to accommodate the new bearing.  Am I reading this wrong?  I do have a lathe and feel I can do the modification, just not sure.

man, i didn't have any instructions like this in my kit.  I'm putting a GL1000 front end on mine thought.  but i thought even for the 750's it was straight forward??

The GL installation is interesting. If you don't have the original bearings for the GL, hold tight, I'll tell ya which spacer I ended up using after having to pull the whole damn set off the first time (for using the wrong one).

Cheers!

I'm interested in how it works as well. I am thinking of picking up a 75 gl1000 front end. that year works right?

75,76 if you want the spoked front. The rim is....interesting. Don't bother putting much hope in it unless you want to pay a lot for a matching rear, or want to run a 17" rear. Try and get a complete front end, and when buying the calipers make SURE that all the parts are included. Rebuilding those puppies is not cheap, and things like the clips are unavailable.

As for the spacer, it's the small spacer on the standard alls balls kit with the 76 front end on a K frame. to dive it in, I used a old steering bearing (be handy with a lathe or drill press... makes it easy), and 1 3/8" ID galvanized steel piping from the hardware store. Freeze the stem, lube the bearing (belray waterproof), put the spacer on (DON'T FORGET), clip the dust seal onto the bearing, put the bearing on, and three good whacks with a hammer on the galvanized pipe will seat it (don't put undue force, and make sure not to hit the cage of the bearing). After that, you're all set!

Cheers!

OP: Sorry for the mini thread-jack.

As noted somewhere in that 21 page forum tutorial above, you do not have to lathe off the spanner nut if you are doing an early 750. Not sure what the sizing would be for your (Kerry) 78 750, but check it out. Instead, the members just leave off the top bearing seal which would go under that nut. That way the spacing for the fork ears will be good.

I have the all balls kit in front of me, does it matter which of the two rubber dust covers goes on top? Same question for the bearings: which one goes on the bottom? one of the bearings has 26-485H, other is 30-50H
