76 and earlier fork-ears
«

I just acquired pre 77-78 fork ears for my 78.
I want the rubber gators and no signals. so my questions:
The Chromed Gator ring holders...they are chrome right?
The signal buzzer, is that welded on or am I not seeing and easy way to remove that tab?
I plan on having them powder coated black...will the media blasting take care of the rust inside. These things always seem to be crazy rusty inside....

The chrome gator ring holds it at the top, but there is also the ridge on the bottom of the fork ear that holds the top part of the gator. The bottom part of the gator slides in a ridge on the fork leg. Do you have that ridge on your 78 that will work? That rubber buzzer you are talking about is attached to a welded bracket on the back of the ear. You can just pull that rubber buzzer out and leave the bracket or hack it off.

The groove looks correct to fit the gator. Now as long as the width of the fork leg is the same as the early ones you should be good to go. Visually it looks correct. Did you pick up some gators?

I forgot to mention there is a top and bottom to the gators. If you put them in the wrong side up they will not stay in the groove on the fork ear. Looking at the gator the rubber with the widest lip goes down.

I just dropped mine off at the powdercoating shop last week for a coat of satin black. One of mine was in really nice shape but the other had some surface rust on the inside. It really just depends on how badly rusted yours are as to what you can expect. I had a helluva time getting the reflector off of the rusted one but a bit of penetrating oil and some heat and I got it off in one piece so I can reuse it.
I couldn't find anything from aftermarket sources that I liked when it finally occurred to me to just have the stock ears coated black. I can't wait to see them installed but I think they will look great.

Also, when installing them, note there are tiny holes in the 'valleys' so to speak, these should face the rear.
