My new project for the summer.
« on: March 06, 2011, 05:30:26 PM »
Here is my summer project. A US model 1977 cb400f. Just picked it up this morning. $350, title in hand. No cafe for this one. Just a straight forward restoration. Wish me luck, I will post pics as I go along.

Here she is in all her glory. Just click on the link for pics of how she looked when I picker her up..Yuck! I already purchased some wheels on Ebay and a few other items. The good news is that the tank and covers seem to be in decent shape. I will start working on her toward the end of this week and keep you posted. I plan to tear down, paint frame/engine, and put back together with the replacement parts I could find. If anyone has done a 1977 cafe version of the 400f I would be happy to have any of the parts you didn't use from the original bike. Here are the pics

Interesting mix of disaster and solid. The tank, sidecovers, seat, and gauges look good. The header seems solid (although in need of chrome or wrapping), but the muffler is shot. The wheels, shocks, and chain guard are done for. But the engine seems reasonably clean.

I already picked up two wheels, shocks, and an original muffler. It's like Christmas around here!!!

Well, I got her all torn apart, painted the frame and bits with Rustoleum Hammered. I love that stuff. I wanted to get the bike up to a rolling chassis and am almost there. Someone please stop me if they see anything wrong or something that I will have to take back apart in order to get something else on. Thanks in advance.

Very nice! Looks like a great candidate for restoration. I'm surprised by how many parts are still available from Honda.

This will definitely be a compilation of parts from 75, 76, and 77 models. As long as it runs in the end I don't really care where the parts came from!   ;D

From what I've read, the 77 CB400F is pretty rare by production numbers. There may be considerable value added by keeping it original. Just a thought.

Yeah, the US model was only produced at a quantity of about 5,000 or so (which is what this is.) I am trying my best, but I did have to swap out some crusty rims for identical rims off a 76 model.

Well, I have been dragging my feet a little. The engine has been cleaned up and put back in. I am going to wait to paint that another year. I am working on carbs and starting the wiring harness. Need to pick up some bits and pieces before its totally done, but should be able to get it running in a week or two. I haven't done anything with the tank, but I fear it may have some varnish on the bottom. Any ideas how to easily eat that stuff up and dump it out?

Well, I am almost finished with what I will do before riding this summer. What do you think? I think she looks pretty neat. Sounds good too.

ps- I have the tail light and muffler, just need to stick them back on.  ;D

Nice. I have always liked the Supersport models. Classic 70's Japanese sportbikes.
