750F header on a K6, rear brake pedal issue to follow
« on: March 07, 2011, 06:46:25 AM »
Over the weekend I installed a stock header from an '75 F model on my '76 750k to make sure everything was going to workout before ordering a muffler.  Other than one leak, it went as expected.  Now I have the issue of the brake pedal not clearing the header while attempting to engage the rear brake.  I know the F models had rear discs, but does anyone know if the splines on the pedals are the same and if the F and K frames have the same brake spindle mounting locations?  I'm really hoping its as easy as swapping out my stock brake pedal for an F pedal.  I want to keep the bike setup for two up riding just in case, so I don't really want to swap to rear sets.  Anyone know if this will work?  If so, anyone have a F brake pedal to sell?

the f has a completely different brake setup. you can either buy all the necessary components to convery you bike to rear disc(i would not spend that kind of money just to fit a header) or do what i did, bash the hell outta it until it clears, i bent my brake lever a little bit as well. pics of it will be in my build thread later this week

I might try to heat the lever up and bend it out a little this week.  I really hate to bash on the header since it's actually in pretty good shape.

yeah mine is in terrible shape hence the decision to bash it into submission. if you have a bench vice that is perfect to make the bends. if you f up used ones are usually pretty cheap. also if you were to put rearsets on i believe those would clear

There seem to be 2 modifications to that black bike.  First it looks like the footpeg is up higher and possibly foward of the normal location.  Second is the brake pedal is much higher then normal (since the shaft is splined he probably just rotated it up), usually they just even with the bottom of the case and the frame rail.

The stock foot pegs on the K have bend on the mount, so they can be repositioned and moved up or back a few inches when rotated it looks like to me.  There is a tab stop on the brake pedal itself and a tab on the frame that hinder the pedal from being angled up by much.  I can get a closer shot of the setup this evening if needed, but I didn't want to start cutting if I can't keep from it.  The simplest solution is probably going to be to rotate the foot peg to where it sits up a few inches and angle the brake pedal. For some reason I couldn't shake the idea that the tabs are going to cause and issue with that, so I just jumped to the heat and bend conclusion.  Here's a quick shot for reference.

I weaseled some time and effort out of a good buddy today who had a torch available.  It's handy having a buddy with all the tools I can't afford.  We bent the pedal out and away from the bike a bit, then bent the toe pad down a little and the middle of the tube up a bit.  At a glance, you'd never know it was modified.  A closer look and you can see the foot peg is adjusted back and up a little, and there is a tad bit of bluing on the length of the pedal from the heat of the torch.  It works, so I'm happy.
