Topic: 1983 Honda V45 750 Sabre

just go this bike from my brother in law.  runs well enuff, but he says clutch slips at hign rpm, and it wont hold second gear if you are really on it hard, holds fine if babied thru the gears. Also has slight coolant leak left side.  We have already put a used 2cd gear assembly.might have been whole trans cuz we swapped it over to the magna clutch.....who can undercut this trans to fix this problem once and for all?  Anything else that might be weak point with this bike?  Like I said it runs well...he had it for 3 years.

They had cam problems but there was a recall that should have remedied it.  I remember doing quite a few back in the beginning years of the V45.  BTW, they are great bikes and reliable as can be when taken care of. The bad second gear tells me that bike was not taken care of.  Did you replace second gear, the shift fork and other related gears? Larry

My brother bought one new in '82 and still has it.  No cam problems.  Good bike.  Will rev right off the face of the tach.  If the tach breaks, get another because when shifting by ear you may run well into the red zone.

I'm thinking we swapped the whole trans because of the clutch pack swap...the magna and the sabre have different basket and spring designs.  I did change out the shift fork because it was bent and the shaft was worn.  when the weather breaks I am going to throw a battery in it and go for a ride and see what it does or doesnt do.  I know he did put a updated set of Cam chain tensioners in it last summer, dont know if he changed the chain or not.  If i have to split the cases again..I will fix all that with new stuff.  I do know this bike runs well, but i do also know it was abused when he got it for next to nothing, and he rode it kinda hard.

uh-oh.  in process of taking it apart to fix coolant leaks.  Got to wiping oil off it where its been leaking, and something shiny looking back.  the final drive shaft that the output gear rides on...eated its way thru the back of the drive housing........oil leak found.  Dang it.  now gotta find a final drive unit...anyone know gear rations to this bike between the Magna, Shadowm Interceptor, or Sabre models?

The cross shaft (picture) is.... trash. I've not seen that particular thing happen before. I'd be curious too as to what caused that. Maybe someone shoved a longer drive shaft in there, maybe the bike was hit from the rear. I'd think that is the later.

The V45/700 cross shaft should work. Actually, I may still have a V45 cross shaft. The interceptors are chain drive so that wont work.
