CB750F1 Float overflow then gas in oil, next steps?
« on: March 10, 2011, 04:11:23 PM »
I'm still a bit new to bikes, so I apologize for any simple questions.  I've built "car" motors, so I get most of the concepts.

After coming back from a ride, my 76' CB750F starting leaking gas ( I didn't notice at first ).  I parked it, went inside for a bit.  Came out to the puddle under my bike, and trail leading out of garage to another small puddle.  The small puddle looked a little oily.  I shut the petcock off (didn't do it right after the ride).  The overflow from the 2nd to the right carb was leaking.

After I cleaned up, I removed the lower float cover to inspect for anything wrong.  I didn't see anything wrong, and the float seemed to be functioning properly.  I put it all back together, and started the bike back up.  No leaking, no problems, EXCEPT for white smoke from the exhaust.  I changed the oil, and its smelt badly of gas.  I assume it got into the oil from the overflow issue.

My question is, what do I do next?  The bike seemed to be running fine except the oil.  I changed the oil, and replaced it.  I searched around, and all that I saw was maybe the float stuck for the time being, and I should also check my compression for bad rings.  Is there anything else I should look for, or inspect?  Compression?  Petcock?

Thanks in advanced for any help!

Naw, you changed the oil, you should be OK.  They stick, gas flows down through an open intake valve, then it seeps past the rings.  It happens.  If you're lucky you catch it quick, as you did, and you fix the leak and change the oil.  You did most of that too, so you're on the right track.  You should figure out why it leaked and fix it, but its not likely you did any damage to your engine.

Is your tank clean and fuel filter in place?  Some junk may have come down from the tank and caused the needle valve to not close.

Recommend you learn the routine of selecting off on the fuel valve when parked.

I second the tank filter check.  Small pieces of sediment can block a float valve open.

I am curious why your overflow tubes didn't keep gas out of the engine.  Check each of the four tubes for blockage, insects like to make nests in there sometimes.  Even if one drained, it doesn't mean that others may or may not be blocked.

The float pivot pin can be polished, the float pin posts can be polished, as well as where they touch on the float hinge.

thanks for the replies

I change the oil and seems to be ok now.  Still alittle white smoke, so I assume after a quick ride, the remaining will go away.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but fuel filter, so you mean the filter element on the petcock?

thanks!

Yeah, the sock filter on the petcock.  They don't seem all that robust of the F bikes.  They are still available if needed.
