No, they are different. The fork tube on a CB 550 1974-1976 will not fit into a CB 500 fork case. I am working on the same on my CB 550, the tubes were bent after a crash. CB 500 fork tubes does not fit into my CB 550 and visa verca.

They should interchange, i fitted a 550 slider to a 500 leg to get twin discs years ago with no problems.
There is a difference on steel tubes and damper assemblies from the very first 500 to the 72 onwards ones if thats what is meant

Not sure what you mean by fork brace, but I think you can take a complete CB 500 fork and install it on the bike, tripple tree is probably the same. But you can't replace the fork tube from a CB 500 into a CB 550 fork case.

Why not check the parts lists or consult
Quick Part Look Up
in a site like
http://www.motogrid.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/7/default.aspx
. ?
That's how I found out that my 500 front legs are identical to some 550 models.

I just put the lower fork leg of a 75' 550 on the tube of my 71' 500. I used the damper and spring from my 500 and bolted it to the bottom of the 550 lower. Fit perfectly and the lower leg of the 550 also uses the same oil seal as the 500.
