No spark on my CB550?
« on: April 04, 2006, 11:18:36 AM »
I looked through many post about this problem but not sure what to do? I'm trying to get my 78 CB550 running, because its been sitting for almost a year. I got a new battery, it turns over,  but I pulled plug 4 and I'm not getting a spark? I checked the fuse box and all fuses look to be good. Where do I go from here to figure this out...???

If your battery is new and charged:

  • check the points for 12V and proper working (ie opening and closing!)
  • check the continuity between the points and the coils
  • check the HT leads to the plugs
  • check the plug caps

There's a theme developing here. You need to start at the battery and follow the ignition circuit along to the plugs, checking each part in turn.

As the ignition circuits are duplicated after the points, it is unlikely that you have a faulty coil, plug cap or plug as it would spark on the other 3 (and the least it would do is backfire)

If all four are dead it must be between the battery and the points.

Turn the red switch on the handle bar to the "run" position  ;D

Dave - you're all heart.

Now why didn't I think of that short, snappy response?

clzay - if that really was the problem, you don't have to admit it...

...done it myself though.

I only wish it was so simple... who knows maybe its is, but its not that easy for me. So the saga begins at the points, I hope this is listed in my Clymer manual? I'll be back... thanks so far.
