bloody japanese bikes are supposed to have good electrics
« on: March 07, 2011, 12:34:59 PM »
further to a previous post about indicators which only function in the first positions (ie dont work in the position with audable buzzer) my 550 f2 now has a non functioning sidelight (not the bulb) and a non functioning tail light (not the bulb or fuse brakelight works fine!). does anybody else suspect that one underlying issue may be the cause or does anyone have any ideas based on past experience? any advice will save this bike from being dragged outside and set on fire!!!!!!

I'd double check the ground wires coming from the lights first (probably the easiest thing to do.)  If that didn't turn up anything, I'd test the power going out to the socket with a tester and go from there.  The sockets last a long time but they're definitely not immortal.

Hold on a second!
You're having problems on a 30+ year old bike. I made a fair bit o' cash fixing electrical problems on nearly new Brit bikes back in the 70s.
I worked on a few Ducatis as well, but the Italian electrical systems were bad - in really imaginitive ways - beyond my ability to correct.

Clean and check all connections and earths, thats about it, fairly simple wiring on these bikes and not too hard to maintain.

This part sounds like a problem in the switch on the handle bar.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I think the electrics on these bikes are fine.  It's the darn PO that is the problem!

every electrical issue on japanese bikes i've ever seen came from mods, or people guessing at fixes from the wrong way around. For instance, if your taillight didn't work, most people would check the bulb first. But some people inexplicably tear apart the fusebox or open the headlight shell... I'm not making this up.

Is your bike unmodified from stock?

thanks for all the replies everyone! i have to take the front end off to do the head bearings but once this is out of the way il be getting back to basics with the wiring checking connections earths and swithches as advised. as far as im aware the bikes unmodified but as has been pointed out its over 30 years old!! dont hold your breath for the fire sale though; i love this bike!!! had a quick blast today and its just such a nice thing to ride, nicely balanced, stears well, goes well and the noise reminds me of what bikes sounded like when i was a kid! so no fires (at least not on purpose!)
