O-ring chain on 400F?
« on: April 04, 2006, 09:44:17 AM »
I read some old posts on this last night, but I couldn't find a concrete statement about the 400F.  Is it possible to run a 530 O-ring chain on stock sprockets on a stock 400F?  I read for sure this is not OK on a 500/550.

yeah the guy at my local Honda dealer just sold me a RX-Ring chain (530XSO) for my 78 CB550, and I don't even know if its going to fit? Its pretty fat, some people say it will some say it won't? I guess i'll just have to try it.

I'd use one of those chains/sprokets Kev with no worries, but I have a length of Renolds 530 HD chain.

I installed a 530 o-ring on my wifes 400 without problem. Next time though I'll switch to a 520, that is if she ever wears this sucker out!

So when you get a 520 sprocket, how do you know it will fit the 400?  Do you happen to have a known source of 520 sprockets that worked on your bike?  I'd love to downsize the chain and upgrade to a O-ring if I can.

In South Africa 520 rear sprockets are not available for the 400,so I buy renthal blanks and machine the centre to fit the 400 hub.
Also need to space out slightly as it's thinner than the oe sprocket. the front sprocket lines up as per oe,as it has a boss to keep it in the same line.
You can order front and rear sprockets from sprocket specialists in the USA, they will make up a rear for you, the front is a stock item I think from the SL350 twin.  I heard that Rick Denoon was going to make up some complete 520 kits for the 400 Four, I think he is a member here.
Where are you Rick?
