How to remove chrome from stator cover
« on: March 09, 2011, 05:26:31 PM »
I purchased a stator cover off eBay and when I opened the box to my dismay it was chrome plated at one time.  The problem is, the chrome has chipped off the top pretty bad and I want to remove the rest and just polish it.  Any suggestions?

In think you may have to sand blast chrome off.  I was told that when I inquired about stripping my rims.  Opted to keep them as is, so I never had the first hand experience.

Good luck.

Simply have a chrome plating shop de-chrome it. EZ to do for them. Very inexpensive.

I just got another one. Hard to find without dents though.

I think I read in the Tips and Tricks section that The Works Toilet cleaner will eat chrome. Check the forum to make sure. I might try it on a set of old rims I have to see if it works.

That's likely because it has clorine in it. Clorine will remove chrome and then, it will remove the rest of the metal! Diluted or undiluted Clorox will do the same thing.

I am NOT recommending you use it!

The hydrochloric acid in the toilet cleaner will remove the chrome, but it will not have an effect on the nickle. I vote for taking it to a plater. They can just add it to a batch of stuff they're doing that week.
