Were 400/4 F2 Crankcases originally painted?

I have had conflicting opinions as to whether the crankcases on a British 1978 400 4 were painted or laquered. I have the engine out and stripped and would like to get it as original looking as possible.

my Canadian cb400f..... bottom half= no paint top half painted. Engine never out of frame (till now)
It seems most people paint both top and bottom during a restoration.
