Drive Rivets for VIN Plate
« on: March 15, 2011, 06:05:28 AM »
I need to get some. How much should I be worried about what type of metal the rivets are made of to prevent electrolytic corrosion? Just get steel coated zinc? Or just go with the 3M double sided sticky tape?

Here is a discussion that may help.  I would not use a double sticky tape.  If it falls off you are in for a hell of a problem if and when you are inspected or want to sell it.

The correct data tag rivets are size 1.5 x 5.0 mm and the Honda part number is: 90841-001-000

Other rivet sources can be found in this old thread:

The 1928-31 Model A rivets will also work in a pinch:

Thanks for that part number. Why are these not available from Honda in the United States? "Not Available."

CMSNL has them, but I have to make a minimum 10 Euro purchase. David Silver is out of stock. Does anyone know what the originals were made out of/plated with? I think I can get them at Fastenal in either zinc/steel or stainless steel. Does that matter?

Not really.  That plate is not the official frame serial number.  Look on the other side of the neck and you'll find the real number - which should match the riveted plate - stamped into the metal.  Now if that number is missing (ground off or welded over) , then you have a problem.
