Inspection sticker mount
« on: March 12, 2011, 04:30:35 PM »
Hi everyone. I've got a K1 and live in new york. I'm not sure what the stickers are like state-to-state, but here they are about 3.5" square, and the state likes them put on the LH fork tube.
Now, i don't know about you guys, but after a lot of polishing my fork tubes, I'd be dammed if I'm going to stick these things on there... esp since the PO had 8 years of stickers on one and it was a #$%* to get all that off and get a nice clean surface again.
Anyway, today I machined a piece of aluminum that attaches to the LH fender mount/brake hose stay with the existing bolt, then a sliced rubber hose goes over the stay for the brake hose, and 2 steel clamps go around it and bolt to the home madeplate, which is notched to hug the boss for the caliper swinger.
It was kinda dark when i finished it, but I'll have pics soon.
For anyone with one of these bikes and a similar state inspection sticker, this is a pretty decent solution, i think. Tho, I'm not sure if it would work on a bike with a rotor shield.
Anyone have any other clever setups for this?
Cheers!

So, this is a basic outline of the setup.. I made a template out of thin plexi first so i could get my holes right.

Phil,

Great idea. I'm in NY too, just my registration reup in the mail. Made me think about the forks (I would like to get to polishing them soon). Then I was reminded of the MASSIVE sticker right in the middle of the fork. Damn thats ugly.

Your idea seems good. I might try to figure something out a little more simple. Without looking at my bike, I can't recall if there is a place for a simple clamp, with platform for the sticker.

Now you have me thinking.....

Just a thought...Is this acceptable to your DMV/RMV? Do they require that it be affixed to the fork tube itself or only be "at" the fork tube? They could reason that a sticker on a removable plate could be "removed" for use on another bike and therefore require that it be directly affixed to the tube. In MA the sticker is small and affixed to the license plate. Last year when I went for my inspection the inspector removed the pile of stickers that had been building up over the years claiming that the RMV had instructed inspectors to remove all old stickers because the buildup of stickers made it easier for sticker thieves to remove the current one at the top 'o the pile.

Nice work!
Until recently, the City of Chicago required motorcycles to display a round metal "city sticker" disc. They have since switched to a smaller design which affixes to the license plate. However, I always liked the old style disc. When forum member Godffery built my 350F, he fabricated a bracket mounted near the fork to display the old disc - similar to the British tax tags.

There was a guy on E-Bay that was cutting very nice Inspection Sticker plates out of stainless steel and selling them for $10.  He would make them any size you wanted.  I bought one for one of the Harley's and put it on the frame down tubes, just under the steering neck.  Then I found out from fellows hereabouts (life-time residents, which I am not) that when they bother to have their bikes inspected at all they then hide the sticker anywhere they please - including the underside of their seat pans.  If they are stopped and asked they open their seat, point, and say "there it is".   And the same folks - several of whom are stopped frequently - also told me that it was a moot point because no one ever asked to see it.  This has not been my experience living in other states.

So I quit having the bikes inspected.  Seriously, I just plain quit two or three years ago.  Last year I got two tickets, one for speeding and one for illegal passing, one State cop and one County.  Neither of them mentioned or asked about the missing inspection sticker.

Here in Virginia, it is of some controversy.  The law states that the sticker is to be on a part of the motorcycle that is not removable.  Considering that the entire front end of this era of motorcycle can sometimes fit multiple machines, this is difficult.  I have a plate, and so far haven't been caught up in any issues.

I just looked this up.  This organization was at the NYC Motorcycle Show, but I didn't stop by their booth.  Wish I had.  They address this specifically...

"We have been informed of many tickets being issued in NYC for Violation Code 71, "Inspection Sticker Missing", when the sticker is present and current but not located on the lower section of the motorcycle's fork leg.  If you received such a summons in NY, your rights have been violated.

NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law § 306 (b) states:  "No motor vehicle shall be operated or parked on the public highways of this state unless a certificate or certificates of inspection, as required by this article, is or are displayed upon the vehicle or affixed to the registration certificate for the vehicle as may be determined by the commissioner."  The Commissioner in NYCRR § 79.20 (c) (6) (i) (g) which governs the application of inspection certificates to motorcycles instructs:  "affix the motorcycle inspection certificate to a permanent structural member on the left front side of the motorcycle visible when approaching the vehicle from the operator's left."  The regulation used to require placement on the left lower fork leg but that was amended back in 2003.

Document and fight those summonses, complain by certified mail to the NYC Department of Finance and the NYPD Traffic Control Division, and submit your complaint to the NYC Civilian Complaint Review Board as well.  The CCRB conveniently accepts complaints by mail, phone and web."

Also, not $10, but this product ws the only one I found on ebay.  I like Phil's homemade plan the best - since it's, well...home made :)

I thought a lot about it, having seen lots of bikes with inspection stickers on plates mounted to the swingarm and the like, and I learned my lesson on another antique... I had the inspection under the seat, and got a few parking tickets for missing inspection. So it's got to be displayed, and since the LH fork tube is the prescribed place, I thought that I had a fighting chance if it was within inches of the 'correct' place.
If I end up with any tickets you guys will be the first to know!

Agreed. Not worth tempting fate if you have a cool solution like yours. Me, my sticker is still the classiest/cleanest part of my forks :)

I'm in trendy B'burg. :). Been here for 10 years and it's finally wearing me down, but 3 blocks from work is hard to beat.

I'm not that familiar with BH, but I know I rode past some guys working on an old honda on the road that comes from grimaldi's along water to red hook. Maybe that's carrol gardens???

Are you signed up for the SOHC relay???

SOHC Relay? In brooklyn?
Tell me more!

Anyway, here's the finished bracket... go ahead and make fun of me, but I found a busted external hard drive in the trash a few weeks ago, and the aluminum stock is great for stuff like this.

I own about 10 of those hard drives, so it's nice to see them used after they go bad!

Check out this link for the relay: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=81259.0

Also, there is a ton of info in it's own section on the main home page.  Where you been?  It's been getting press in motorcycle classics magazine!!!!

I don't get those magazines, but that's a pretty cool idea. I don't think I'm going to get in the game, but I'm planning to go in-force to mid-ohio this summer. Bringing a truck too, hoping to come back with some rusty treasure.

Phil, I don't get that magazine either.  I just figured it would be a decent overview of what's happening.

There is really nothing more to it than a bunch of guys getting together for a ride on some nice roads, with a rough plan to get to the next group of guys...

You should think about it.  I'm looking forward to meeting some people that I "know" from this forum.

No. There is not a single nice road in brooklyn. and this is not some snide 'what do you know about brooklyn ' reply. there are seriously no nice roads here. You need to creep your bike a few miles till you get somewhere else, so as not to damage the suspension. The FDR on a summers weekday night past 1am is a pretty great ride tho.. Smooth enough, with a skyline to one side, and a river to the other. On some nights, that makes all the other bull$hit almost worth it.

Phil is right.  Figures I have only ridden the FDR earlier, when the traffic is bumper to bumper - but going 70mph!!!!

There are in fact some nice places to ride, but I would not call the roads enjoyable.  Just the scenery.  Manhattan has a couple other places I like.  River Side Drive, up near the Cloisters...

But then there is always that gaping pot hole just as you start to enjoy yourself.

I've been up that way - but looking forward to doing more this year.  Even knowing that I will be traveling to nicer areas makes dealing with the roads here, on the way out, more bearable.

Can't wait for my first trip up to Harriman State Park this year.  And the Relay should be a blast as well.

Fortunately Staten Island is just across the bridge with some nice twisty (although slow) roads.  ;)
