550 cam install
« on: March 17, 2011, 10:41:07 AM »
hello, im putting back together my cb550 and have one little question.  i have the time marks all lined with the crank shaft but how do i know if im 180 degrees off from the spark? im having a hard time explaining this but my 1 and 4 cylinders are at tdc on the t mark with the cam lobes aimed upward and the notch is flat with the deck.  i have a 50/50 chance of getting it right in time with the spark. even tho the piston are at tdc with the cam in the correct spot, how do i know that the spark is going to 1 and not 4? am i thinking way to hard on this?  ???

You are lined up just fine.  These CB's have a "waste spark" ignition, which is to say that each plug fires TWICE per cycle.  One spark will be in time with the end of the compression stroke, the other "wasted" spark occurs at the end of the exhaust stroke.  Plugs 1&4 fire together, 2&3 fire together.  In both cases, only one cylinder is able to actually USE the spark.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
